These are for low voltage landscape lighting that uses AC current, No polarity is necessary. If you are using these for DC current connections, I would remove one of the caps and paint it Red or White (whatever) to keep it straight. **Q: what is the water rating?** A: All I see is water proof. Tight connection, I have used outside above ground with no problems. **Q: Anyone use these successfully with 10 gauge stranded (10/2) landscape wire?** A: 10 gauge is considered overkill for 12v landscape lighting. 12 gauge has always been about as big as anyone uses especially since the new LED lights draw only a small percentage of the current that the old halogen lights did. I went with 12 gauge wire on my system. To answer your question I think 10 gauge would work with these but would be a little more difficult to work with because of the size.
