I got this to replace a faulty cylinder on a Staples mesh office chair. The old cylinder would weep down over the course of about 20 minutes, forcing me to raise myself back up many times per day. I considered getting a new office chair, but aside from the faulty cylinder, this chair is still in great condition and is very comfortable. At first I ordered one that was too tall. It wouldn't let me adjust the chair so that my feet would touch the floor. So I bought this one instead. This one is a bit taller than the original cylinder, but I never needed the chair to be really low so that's fine. This one does allow the chair to be adjusted much taller than the old cylinder. The old one needed to be all the way up for the chair to be at a comfortable height and with this one the best height is about halfway up which is great! Since I was going to be performing surgery on my chair, I also ordered a set of polyurethane double wheels for it and I love them too! I will never use plastic wheels on an office chair anymore. These poly wheels are super nice. Overall, I turned my mediocre but comfortable office chair into a super-nice, smooth, adjustable chair that holds its height. So far I am very happy. Will it last? Time will tell. I expect run-of-the-mill chair cylinders probably last about three or four years, but my Herman Miller Aeron cylinder is probably 20 years old and still works fine. If your office chair cylinder is failing and you like your chair otherwise, then get this one. You won't be disappointed!!

This replacement cylinder is a beast—strong, sturdy, and a great value for the price. It was easy to install and instantly made my chair feel more solid and secure. The product claims to hold up to 1000 pounds, and it really does feel that strong. No wobble, no slow sinking over time like my old one. My wife comes into my office and i'm not worried to have her hop onto my lap. That said, I made the mistake of not measuring beforehand. I was using this on a Lazyboy executive chair, and the new lift was taller than expected. Now my knees bump into the underside of the desk, which was on me for not double-checking specs. I’ve since ordered a shorter one, but I’m saving this for another chair because the quality is excellent. If you need a tall, heavy-duty gas lift and have the space for it, this is a solid choice. Just be sure to measure your setup first!

Worked well without any crazy tools, basically I was able to use a metal hammer to remove both pieces of the piston before reinstalling the new one. The first thing you do is go ahead and lay the chair down to have access to the underside of the feet, then with your hammer you would need to take a series of firm hits to the bottom of the broken cylinder that will eventually free it from the base. Once you remove the cylinder from the base there's a chance that the actual piston that's connected to the bottom of the chair will still be attached, from there you would hit the piston from the side with a downward force and then the underside with the upward force and that will loosen the friction lock and it will pull right out. Once you get that to reinstall the new piston is easy drop the bottom into the wheel section of the chair pull off the access cap for the piston and put your old chair back on the new piston and carefully sit on the chair and you have created the friction lock and it is ready to go. I have the GT racing Ace chair series and this cylinder worked great, it gave me extra height but will adjust to the lowest position if needed and I wouldn't worry about colors because if you reuse the cylinder cover then you won't see if you purchased a silver or black piston so save yourself a couple bucks.

UPDATE: Sadly, just about 3 months later, I had to buy another one. It started sinking. If this replacement lasts longer, then I'll update the stars again in the future. This is a perfect replacement for my DX Racer gaming chair. The model that was on my DX Racer's hydraulic thing was "sp/0313-ad" and this is a perfect replacement for it. 9.25" x 2" is what it is. It does go a bit higher than the original, but I like that. It also feels more "springy" when sitting down on the chair now. Perfect and so much cheaper than buying from DX Racer!!!

It seems about every 4 years I find myself replacing my office chair and mostly because of gas cylinder going bad. After watching multiple videos I ordered this. The bottom came apart easily but the top took some coaxing with hammer, punch and vise. 15mins and my chair is like NEW and I saved $100+ and the hassle of disposal of chair. Thanks!

I've been having a sinking executive desk chair for quite some time. It has been driving me crazy while limiting my ability to actually concentrate on work. I tried all different types of hacks, but none make an actual difference until I ran into this solution. After installing it, the seat feels brand new. Higher heights than what I had before (which is a plus for me), feel very sturdy, and does not ink at all! For $20, this is definitely worth it! My experience with Removing the older cylinder: Removing the older cylinder was the hardest part. I didn't have a pipe wrench at hand. I tried striking the base with a 4lbs sledgehammer for over an hour without avail. Luckily I had a locking plier with me. Turns out the best solution is to tighten the locking pliers on the old cylinder. Make sure the base is grounded/anchored then hit the end of the locking pliers to imitate a sudden twisting motion. After a couple of hits, I was able to twist the cylinder within the base until I was able to take it out. Much better than senselessly pounding the base with a hammer, as the best way to actually get the cylinder out is by twisting it out like a screw. I didn't find the gloves to be useful as they're very slippery. Seems like their only benefit is to keep your hands clean while going through the installation process.

It is now 2026 about 2yr stopped being able to go up and down. I'm 190 lb not overweight, just didn't hold up, for my expectations are off and I thought it would last a lot longer than this.

I had to replace the one from a brand new chair cause the cylinder in it was garbage. This one is perfect! hasn't sunk at all for the 4 months i have been using it. Highly recommend! If you're fat and heavy it should work for you. I am over 400lbs and it's a strong bugger.
