The coasters are smaller than standard coasters and the material is like glass. So if you set a glass of ice water on the coaster the perspiration from the glass will run down onto the coaster and then down onto the surface beneath the coaster. Not only did they not protect the surface of my coffee table from water, the coasters actually bleed color (blue dye) that stain wood!
