A Saint for the Ages
Catholic traditionalists go into ecstasy over Mother Theresa, but I have been personally more inspired by Sister Jane Kelly whose vocation as a Presentation BVM sister in California spanned the era from the 50's through the 90's. Like MT, she was a woman with a clear vision of her calling, was courageous beyond belief and did not suffer fools gladly having encountered a cartel of THEM in the Santa Rosa Diocese during the mid 90's. Fearlessly, she used her skills and connections to bring down the ringleader of them all, the prominent & popular bishop himself. This is a great read for those who remember that scandal vividly & were blessed by Jane's prophetic voice and actions as well as horrified by the retaliatory mafia like treatment inflicted on her by members of her own order and vengeful members of the clergy. John Van Der Zee's marvelous book, Agony in the Garden (Sex, Lies and Redemption from the Troubled Heart of the American Catholic Church) integrated the Santa Rosa scandal with systemic problems within the Church. Sister Jane Kelly was portrayed accurately throughout his classic as the heroine that she was.Granted, X Rated Nun is not a literary masterpiece, but simply the memories of an aging senior after the fact who, obviously, did not have help editing this, her personal memoir.... a very humble piece. John Van Der Zee's depiction of her as well as his own analysis of the scandal is magnificent and gives Sister Kelly full credit for having the saintly courage to go public. PTL for Sister Jane!
