Four stars
This is a quietly delightful short novel about a simple small-time farmer, Claudio, who lives in Calabria. He is content to live alone and write poetry. His main contact with the outside world is through the postman who delivers mostly junk mail. His life changes dramatically—the postman's younger sister starts delivering the mail, and a pregnant unicorn turns up on his property. His efforts to keep the unicorn secret and his growing love for the girl make up the bulk of the story. The local gang of thugs interferes with both of these goals, and the helicopters from the news media flying around trying to get a glimpse of the unicorn don't help.Eventually, as is all good fairy tales, he is successful in both. The book is charming, as one would expect from the author of The Last Unicorn.

Great Book!!!
What a great book! Thoughtful, charming, beautifully written, with interesting characters and complications. Yes, it's another unicorn novel, but one so different in approach from The Last Unicorn or The Unicorn Sonata that's there's no suggestion of treading the same path. I read it in an afternoon and initially so wished it would have been longer, but I came to realize that it's exactly the right length for enchantment. Please buy this, read this and give it to your friends.

Unicorn revisited
52 years ago I read A Fine & private place and the Last Unicorn.I wrote the author because I had a college girls crush on him because of those books. He nicely wrote me back and mentioned his wife and daughter. I don't know where the letter went but I found the signed book the other day and it was a window back to that 18 yr old. It was time for a little magic and another story about good, evil, love and unicorns. Against all odds & 50 years, it still touches my heart

Love!
This book was amazing, and a wonderful ending for an untrusting middle aged guy who lives alone with his goat and cats. All of a sudden a unicorn appears in his secluded garden. A must read for anyone who loves romance, drama, and fantasy!

Not what I expected
Well I wasn't expecting a discarded library book. Was hoping to display on a bookshelf but now it looks like I stole a library book. Guess for the price I can't complain...although libraries usually sell their discards for 50c.

Of Love and Other Unicorns
Happy to report Peter S. Beagle hasn’t lost his magic touch and caught another unicorn in his web of words. This is a wondrous, bittersweet, gripping tale, which manages to strike the perfect balance between heartwarming and heartrending. It is as much a meditation on loneliness, guilt and the darkness within, as it is a celebration of human kindness, the poetry of everyday life , and the ways the sacred can burst into the mundane, making the world whole again.

How does one review a book penned by a master at his craft?
This is a fairy tale. No fairies, for those allergic to fairies, but a tale written with a Happily Ever After in mind. Good triumphs in more ways than the obvious with a modern setting.

Sheer Joy
I'm delighted that with Summalong and now this novella Peter Beagle has recovered his unique touch both for him and his readers i hope he has been able to put his personal problems behind him And we're back to unicorns in a lovely romantic tale which at a time when I'm suffering from health problems gave me an hour or so of blessed relief Of all mythical beasts they are as Mr Beagle has always shown surely the most awesome and vulnerable People of my age ( a few years younger than the author) may recollect some of the novellas of Paul Gallico which are long forgotten now This is a love story of the truest type Claudio's love for his land and animals ; his love for the unicorns and finally the love of his life Not for the first time Peter Beagle brought tears to my eyes Perhaps its time for a reissue of Last unicorn in this country

A lesser work
A lesser work--and in some ways a more pedestrian "Last Unicorn." But Beagle's unique voice is always welcome.
