How does the case fit without the keyboard? Is it too loose??

It is quite snugg without the keyboard.

How do I see how much battery charge is left? fn+ctrl just makes the power LED flash. No info is shown under settings on tab S8.

Honestly I am not sure but I hardly ever charge it. I just shut it off after each use and it lasts a very long time.

Does it come with a pen?
