To smudge is to spread the smoke of burning herbs over a person, space, or object for purification. The smoke carries prayers to Creator. This ceremony usually involves a feather or fan. If smoke is not allowed, smudging the oils for sage, cedar and sweet grass may be used as a substitute. This smudging kit honors the tradition of a "medicine bundle" and "To Walk in Beauty". Smudging Tips:  Gently fan the tip of the sage with free hand until it begins to smoke. Blowing on sage can be considered disrespectful.  Only allow flame to stay lit just long enough to allow sage to smoke vigorously.  Clear yourself by crossing sage over your body from floor to head, front to back, and all around in a clockwise rotation.  Start at the most central room of the home and work your way out, smudge around each window, closet, or vent opening to spiritually "seal" them.  Say a prayer of your choice at each doorway, request that the room be sealed and protected.  Open the windows and allow the smoke to clear naturally, do not use forced ventilation.
