Absolutely. It holds my 5DMkIII and 100-400 just fine. Subtle vibrations with long lenses do make their way to the camera, so solid ground and remote release and mirror lock or live view needed for longer focal lengths.

Q: I have a Nikon 5200. Will this tripod hold it steady when I need to take shots with the camera pointing down.

It will be steady enough to take shots with the camera pointing down as it comes with a Swiss compatible ball head and adapter; provided you do not use the second center section and other parts are tight . Mine with Canon 5DII with 24-105 L/4 lens has no problem.

No. All of the feet have rubber tips. Manfrotto makes a mini tripod base for some of its monopods. I've used them, and the are not helpful.
