Visual Discrimination, Grades 2 - 8

Wonderful enrichment
Good book to help build understanding of patterns and logical reasoning. My daughter has really done well with it. I am not sold on the grade levels 2-8, though. She is 7 years old and has completed the first half of this book rather readily. I would scale this for younger years -- K-3. I would still recommend the book, because it does build visual discrimination skills, which are essential to developing critical thinking.Updated 04/21/2013We finished the book readily. It was harder by the end, which I liked, because it really challenged her to look closely to find the pattern. If they could create an entire book that was like the last few pages, that would be a great next step in the series. Well worth the monies spent, though!

Great, Great, Great Book!
My almost 4-year old son could not put it down. He finished half of the book the very day it arrived, and I had to take it from him to save for the next day. So much fun doing it, and great educational tool. Plus, he got most of the questions right. So my advice is to try on young kids - they may really surprise you! Now ordering directly from publisher (Amazon now somehow only has one seller at a price that we can buy 2) for extra copies for my son to practice more. Wonderful, wonderful book!

NO EXPLANATIONS or strategies, not a good choice for advanced students grades 5 and higher
I purchased this book for my 5th and 6th graders to work on their pattern recognition skills to prepare for GATE test.My sons have pretty good nonverbal abilities skill-set and found this book pretty easy.Although the book says it is designed for students in 2nd through 8th grades,we felt like this would be a choice for someone less advanced or in lower school grades, definitely 4th grade or lower. However for those with weaker pattern recognition skills this book has a major flaw:It has answers at the end of the book, but NO EXPLANATIONS what so ever,NOR does it include any STRATEGIES for improving those skills (like look for rotation, overlapping, one on top of the other, 2D shapes vs 3D objects, mirror-type flip etc). Each activity starts with words: "Look at the first set of shapes. Think how the first shape changed to become the second one. Now look at the second set of shapes and see if you can find what the first shape should change into. Choose your answer from the shapes in the group on the right."This is the only clue you and your child will get for solving the patterns. In case of a mistake you will have to figure out the pattern algorithm on your own.The book consists of 30 activities, each of them has 6 patterns in it, so 180 patterns whole. Some patterns are actually designed to be solved with color in mind, however everything in this book is black and white.

Great for 2-3 grade students
We had purchased this book for our second grade kid primarily to practice for COGAT tests, this book has been very useful, the COGAT test is done and we are awaiting results, will update once the results are out to see how much this book helped.Overall the questions were good and my kid really enjoyed practicing from this book, I was there all the time sitting besides him and help him whenever he had any issues understanding the patterns.I would recommend this book to all the kids 7-10 yrs who want to do some additional practice.

Nice quick buffer activity to 'reset'
I'm really happy that I found this book. My son was having a hard time with this type of problem and I wanted a book of JUST this type of questions. The pages are clear and the black and white contrast is easy to see differences. There are just enough on a page to complete one or two in between other activities. I have my son use his finger to point to the answer and verbally explain why the other choices didn't work as I am at the table with him anyways when we homeschool. There is usually just one every couple pages that stumps him. My son just turned six and and I feel like this is the right level for him, but it depends on individual child.

Grade level should be lower
I agree with the other reviews in regards to the difficulty level of this book. Got this book out of curiosity for my 3rd grader to see how he would do with these types of problems. He is advanced in math, but this is more a test of logical thinking and pattern recognition. He whipped through this book in two sittings...often commenting, "too easy!". After completing the first 5 pages he wanted to skip to the last problem in the book to see how hard it was. I would say that this book is more geared toward K-2 students. It's a fun way to introduce this type of problem solving.

Love this book!
As a school based Occupational Therapist I LOVE this book! It's perfect for working on visual perceptual skills with the kids on my caseload. The worksheets are made to be copied and can be used with all of my kids. They progress from easy to more difficult and come with answers in the back of the book. My copy was obviously not new as many of the pages had answers and other markings on them. They were lightly done in pencil and were fairly easy to erase, but still a used book.

visual descrimination workbook
I bought this workbook for someone who needed practice in this area of finding patterns and identifying the next step in the pattern. There are more than adequate number of examples. After practicing a number of pages the person started to understand the patterns. it is still hard but the person is getting better at it each day. I rated it four because I thought their could be more guidance within the book on how to gradually build up your skill. The book is basically the same through out. There is a picture and it changes into the next picture. once you figure out how it changed you have to look for the same pattern with-in the example. Overall it is a good book with many examples. really does help with visual discrimination skills.Visual Discrimination, Grades 2 - 8

Un gran acertijo matemático
Una buena opción para el desarrollo del pensamiento lógico matemático. Los alumnos les gusta realizar los ejercicios, aunque les parece fácil, a la hora de explicar su elección es el trabajo más interesante que realiza el Niño.

Poor
Extremely difficult and more psychometric testing than visual discrimination. Not suitable for assessing visual discrimination or perception, far too much logic reasoning.

One of my favorite educational books for my 5
One of my favorite educational books for my 5.5 years .No colored pictures- black and white printing , but its a good booster for your little one's brains. It gets complicated slowly with every page.

great fun
Challenges young children to recognize visual patterns. The patterns gradually get more complicated / harder. My son loves challenging himself.
