Q: Will these keep determined cats out of a cabinet? Is the opening large enough for sneaky squirmy cats to fit?

This made me laugh - we could probably swap some funny tales. We have them only on drawers, not cabinets. The opening is not large enough for even a skinny sneaky squeaky squirmy cat to get in. However, our clever Zena did figure how to get the top, and only the top, drawer of our dresser open in spite of the latches. She fiddled the top one open and then laid on the opening, and her weight caused the drawer to depress below the catch so it bypassed the latch. But that only works on the top one.

Screws. Easy to install. They work great.

Q: Does this require a second piece installed on the cabinet to latch to? Or does it just latch to the frame

You position the latch so that the upper frame of the cabinet or drawer opening lands on the slanted skid of the latch as you close it. It depresses the spring as the drawer or cabinet door closes. Then, when the doors closes fully, the spring loaded latch comes up behind the cabinet frame to prevent its opening. When you want to get into the drawer/cabinet, there is enough travel to allow you to insert your finger into the small opening to depress the latch. There is only the one piece. Our dogs had learned how to get into our trash cabinet under the sink. This latch has helped us come home to find no mess from them and the trash. I hope this has helped you.

No you do not have to press the lock to close the drawer.
