I have no idea how to rate this. I haven't used it yet, but I will. However, my buddy who told me to buy this knows what he is talking about, so that has got to count for something. Basically, Gel Spun has a thinner diameter so you can fit more backing on your reel with out taking up space. I like that idea, and this is why is more expensive than other backing, which in general is expensive as far as I am concerned, but I don't know how they make it. Regardless, it went on the Lamson reel just fine, and until I hook into something that tests it, it gets 4 stars.

Works great. This SA gel spun was tested this past week when fishing for albies at Cape Lookout. My first albie of the week took about 150 yds of backing off my reel and I was glad that I had another 150 yds just in case it was needed. The backing looked very think as it was running out, but it held strong and after a bit of reeling-in, I had a nice fish in hand. He looked fine and healthy when released back into the deep blue sea.

Didn’t seem like the full 400 yards on the spool, but filled my reels as needed. Great quality. Can’t wait to get into it on a few big fish!

Very strong backing line and thin so you can add more backing than regular type backing. Need to be careful when you hook up to a large bonefish as a fast line coming off your reel can cut your finger.

I bought these to make flies for Christmas (Kiritimati) Island fly fishing trip...they work well !!! :)I needed the extra backing as a backup measure ! :)If you are going to Christmas Island, it's a good idea to bring extra backing...fish can break you off in the coral

I like how much more backing tha I can load on my reel compared to conventional line. Hopefully the extra yardage can help me from getting spooled. Great product!

Works great. Much thinner than dacron so finally I was able to update my 10wt large arbor reels with a proper length of backing.

not sure what i got.. a hand-written sticker on a spool with some yellow backing. the hand-written sticker is the only way to indicate the product type and length. as advertised, was supposed to come in a manufacturer packaging which would be (1) unopened and (2) specify the product line weight and length. Does Amazon allow this? They shouldn't.
