What does the "DC" mean?

DC stands for direct current.  That's what makes the fan so quiet.  One thing to note, since the fan is DC, there is a ten second delay before the fan actually come on.  It works great though.

My install will be a retrofit. Can this be installed with no attic access?

Per Panasonic, if you already have a fan installed and a switch in the wall to turn that fan on and off, this will help with the install.  This model does have the Flex-Z-Fast bracket to assist with install without accessing the attic. Depending on the size of the unit you are removing, you may need to cut a larger hole in the ceiling.  The base of the fan is 10-1/4“ x 10-1/4”.  Keep in mind, this model takes 6” duct, so depending what size duct the previous fan had, you may need to install 6” ducting to use this fan. The included installation manual will help provide further instructions for retrofit installations.

Can this fan be used for replacement vs new construction?

I purchased this fan to replace an existing fan and I found the installation could have been a simple retrofit, but this model requires 6” ducting for proper operations. I made this ducting a part of my replacement as the previous fan was not properly installed. I will be purchasing a few more of these fans to install along with the appropriate duct and wall cap products. The fan includes an easy-to-install “Flex-z” bracket that makes this potentially a simple retrofit. The hole for the box is specked to be 10.5” square for “new” construction or 10 7/8” for replacement. I cut the hole for 10 7/8” and feel I could have made it the 10.5 “ size and still have made this retrofit work.
