Hollywood legends Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine (from the original Broadway cast) are dazzling in this Frank Loesser (How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying) masterpiece. Featuring hits like "Luck Be a Lady" and "A Woman in Love," this smash film version of one of Broadway's most popular musicals is guaranteed rip-roaring "four-star entertainment" (New York Daily News). Review: Guys & Dolls is a TRUE masterpiece of a musical! - All I can say is... WOW. I think this has to be probably my second favorite movie musical (and one of my FAVORITE musicals) of all times... tying with "Singin' In The Rain", being preceeded only by "Damn Yankees" and followed by "Sweet Charity." So what makes Guys & Dolls so great? Michael Kidd's choreography for one thing... the guy is a genius!!!! He's introduced some of the best dancing stars to the stage (ie, Gwen Verdon in "Can-Can") and this showcases his talents as a choreographer. Another thing are the wonderful tunes. Can you imagine a world without tunes like "Adelaide's Lament" and "I'll Know"? I sure can't. Of course, the actors have a lot to do with it. Case in point number 1... Marlon Brando. Okay, so Marlon Brando's NOT a singer... big deal. But it's not like he's absolutely so horrendous you want to THROW things at the screen. In fact, I found him marvelous! He's VERY talented. He and Jean Simmons have such charisma together! Case in point 2, Jean Simmons! Who better to play adorable little mission doll Sarah Brown than this lovely lady? And her singing pipes aren't terrible either. Her acting skills are most exquisite! Case in point 3... Frank Sinatra. GORGEOUS MAN. GORGEOUS VOICE. And whatta actor! He is so loveable as Nathan Detroit... and he and Vivian Blaine have SUCH A GREAT CHEMISTRY!!!! Which brings me to case in point 4... VIVIAN BLAINE. I adore her. I don't think there will ever be another Adelaide who comes even CLOSE to her (except for, perhaps, the wonderful Miss Faith Prince...). I mean, Vivian just OWNS this part! That voice... that electricity... to me, she just steals the show! So in short, if you love 50s movie musicals, or you're just a fan of the Broadway show... buy it! (But there are a few songs cut... such as "A Bushel and a Peck" and "Marry The Man Today"... but don't let that discourage you!) Review: A blast from the past! - A great movie with Marlon Bralon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine.

Brando and Sinatra
Great classic musical, fun and enjoyable. Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando, singing dancing, romance and ultimately good time. This DVD arrived in perfect condition as a replacement for a vhs. I am happy to own this in DVD format.

Very entertaining but some of the best songs are missing.
I grew up with the LP of the original stage production so the music of the show has always been in my veins, but I had never seen the movie until now. The movie differs from the stage production in that there are songs in the movie that are not in the stage show and vice versa. I cannot understand why My Time of Day, I've Never Been In Love, More I Cannot Wish You and Marry the Man Today were excluded from the movie - they are all wonderful songs. Had they been included the movie would have been way too long, but then the rather convoluted and often corny script could done with some generous cutting. Marlon Brando's singing and dancing abilities are a revelation (he's not dubbed) and his good looks and supreme acting abilities make him a magnetic Sky Masterson. His rendition of Luck Be a Lady is one of the highlights of the movie. Frank Sinatra is perhaps a little too smooth and confident as Nathan Detroit who needs to be something of a loser, but his legendary voice and charisma make him very watchable. Vivian Blaine recreates the role of Adelaide from the original stage production and she is spot on. In the delightful Take Back Your Mink she looks uncannily like Marilyn Monroe, who was considered for the role. Jean Simmonds, normally a dramatic actress, is a beautiful Sarah Brown and the necessary chemistry between her and Brando is palpable and she, like Brando, surprises with a wonderful singing voice. The script, based on the writings of Damon Runyon, contains some gems ("everybody's got psychology") but is overly long and I found myself wanting to fast forward to the next musical number on a couple of occasions. For lovers of Broadway musicals this is a must see, but if you already know the show be prepared to be disappointed by the omission of some of the best musical numbers.

Guys and Dolls, Widescreen Deluxe Edition
What's not to like about this movie? It is one of the best musicals ever written. With Frank Loesser's score and Damon Runyan's dialogue and characters, it is an American Classic! When I saw it was available on Amazon, I didn't hesitate. I wanted to own a copy so I could watch it any time I liked. Interestingly, the movie version contains unique songs that did not appear in the original Broadway stage production, but, in my view the film version is better. It would've been easy to simply adapt the play into a movie, but the producers decided otherwise, and in my opinion, they have created a viewing experience that, while different, is much superior. Everyone will agree that watching a stage play is quite a different experience than watching a film. Both have their places, and I think that a person could see both versions of Guys and Dolls and come away pleased and not feeling like he'd wasted his money on a clone. Brando and Simmons, and Sinatra and Blaine are perfect "odd couples" and Stubby Kaye leads the comic Runyan ensemble. They don't make 'em like this any more! I challenge anyone who watches this movie not to spend the next few days whistling the tunes. You can't get them out of your head. It's a 5-star smash hit!

Terrible copy! Part of (English) sound track missing. One of show's top numbers ("Marry the man today") has been cut. A great musical but a lousy copy!
