Decent Insights But Showcasing Too Many Questionable Leaders
Richard Daft basically assembled parts of leadership theories and crafted them together in this textbook. For example, he basically slapped different names for each of the eight steps that John Kotter offered in “Leading Change.” To his credit, Daft offered a useful if uninspiring overview of leadership. But Daft made a host of idiotic claims and made a series of questionable choices on which leaders to showcase. The book started on the wrong foot with references to a forgotten scandal involving Gen. David Petraeus and James MacGregor Burns's name spelled wrong. More substantially, dismissing the Catholic Church and its more than 1.3 billion adherents as “on the verge of becoming irrelevant” was laughable. Daft also signaled out Daniel Snyder, the owner of the National Football League’s (NFL’s) Washington franchise, for attention as a leader who can change. Based on that franchise’s continued problems and Synder’s ongoing challenges, Daft could have found a better example without much difficulty. Of course, Daft also pointed to Ron Rivera as a great example of leadership, not exactly an elite coach in the NFL.Daft also made a poor decision in showcasing Gen. Stanley McChrystal's leadership. One of the core foundations of any republican government is the military remaining under civilian control and showing respect for elected officials. McChrystal did not show that respect in 2010, leading to his dismissal by then-President Barack Obama, something Daft totally ignored. In his brief look at the Duke University lacrosse controversy, Daft praised then-President Richard Brodhead, who drew heavy fire for rushing to judgment against the three accused students.Daft did not even bother to note that Duke was forced to settle with those students. Frankly, Daft should have known better, and there is no room for playing loose with the facts while ignoring some of them in a textbook. Daft might insist that Broadhead "accepted responsibility" when, in fact, he folded after facing legal challenges. Whatever we think of this high-profile case, Daft's efforts to praise Broadhead for getting the truth out and being crisis-ready are laughable. While Daft rightly showcased Paul Wolfowitz's tenure at the World Bank as a failure, he left out a significant part of it. Wolfowitz drew heavy fire for his relationship with an employee, including giving her raises and other perks. And that’s the problem. This book has not been updated as much as it should be and the publisher should be embarrassed. The book certainly has some uses but there are better options out there. I’d offer 1.5 stars if possible which rounds up to 2 stars.

Good for students but was too used
I needed to read this book for a college course. I rented one and there was writing all in the book. Although I figured it was used usually when I rent books the vendors don’t allow any writing or etc in the book before hand so everyone can experience the book “first hand”.

Great book to learn about leadership
I used the book for one of my classes. It is a pretty interesting book. i am not the type of person who has a passion for reading but I read this book and I'll tell you what, I learned a lot about myself and different leadership styles. More than likely will buy it just to have it at home.

Helpful Text
I have this as the reference for my MBA course. It's really good reference material with lots of examples about the different theories. It was delivered on time. One point I noticed about the book, while going through it and almost at the end of it now, is that most of the examples in the book are US firms, the US is one of the major economies and leading countries but it would be much better to have diversified examples from leaders and businesses around the world as the book is being used all over the world.

Quick delivery and good condition
The book arrived, well-packed and seemed quicker than the time estimate provided when ordering. This is a soft cover, so i was not sure how that would ship and arrive as far as condition... it was just fine. As far as the book contents, i have not completed it yet, but from the chapters i have gotten through, it seems like an easy read and has quite a few graphics and short stories/examples of principles applied, so i think it is going to be great to support the leadership program i am in.
