The lining is soft and has a definite coating on it. It washed well, I dried it on air dry out of fear of damaging the coating that blocks the light. The shades I lined with this material are in an eastern facing room which has bright direct light in the morning. The room is now so dark in the morning, it impresses me. When holding an intense LED flashlight behind this material, nothing shows through. I would post a picture of my shades darkening the room, but it would just be a picture of a dark room. They also keep the heat out, which is particularly nice at this time of year. This is new to me so I can't speak to it's longevity, but as of now I am very pleased. I also lined a homemade sleep mask with it. It is easy to sew through multiple layers.
