Ancient India is portrayed as mythical, mystical, and romantic. It’s no surprise that Alexander the Great fell in love with it. One could still find Greek influences in their architecture and art. This is the land that gave us the beloved “Baghavad Gita” & “Mahabharata”; the religions Jainism and Hindu. It is the land of Mahatma Gandhi, and Siddharta Gautama, later known as Buddha. It is also the land of spices, most notably, saffron. This book covers the birth of a civilization in the Indus Valley, which spans not only India but parts of Pakistan as well. It describes the three Harappan periods, the Nanda Empire and the Mauryan Empire & their rulers. There is so much to learn about India, I would recommend looking through the bibliography for additional references. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to learn more about the history of the Orient.

Contemporary with the Egyptians and Mesopotamians, another great civilization flourished in another part of the world, in the Indus River Valley, which is now India. The Indus Valley civilization gave rise to great prosperous cities such as Harappa and Mojenjo-Daro. This part of the world saw the origins of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Zoroastrianism. Because of its bountiful resources and riches, the Indus Valley attracted empire builders, especially Alexander the Great (Iskandar) and much later, Great Britain. Ancient India developed a sizable cultural legacy with its art, architecture, science and religions. An interesting look into a not so well-known civilization.

This book gives the early history of India from 1800 to 80 BCE. Along the way, it introduces the reader to many ancient cultures and many transitions between kings and dynasties as the ‘rulers’ of the area. Included is a summary of what daily life was like for the ‘average’ inhabitant of the area. Within the list of Rulers is Alexander the Great, who engaged in some of his major battles here. Also, during this time, the caste system was first established and Buddha was born and began his teachings. The oldest religious documents in the world come from this period. If you are interested in learning about this fascinating land and its first civilizations, this is a book for you.

This was a very well written, interesting and informative book about India’s history. When they say it’s a captivating history they truly mean it. I was shocked about how much detail and information that was laid out in this book. I would suggest that if you have any interest in India and it’s history that you take and read this book and learn all about the fascination history of India.

Was like a text book for seventh graders

Not one moment of boredom while reading the book. Must read for all history lovers all over the world and especially India

Quite a small book with bigger font. I guess it’s better to read Wikipedia rather than ordering this book as it’s quite pricey for the content.

Everything in this book is taken from the famous mythology books of India. Wort book about history. I wasted my money to read history from Ramyana and Mahabharata (mythology books) I would go and read them instead.

I was hoping a little bit in-depth analysis of the subject matter. But. It's written typically like a history text book describing events after events without much insights. Not very impressed after reading the likes of Sapian and Robert's World History.
