Q: How do you get this clock to stay on?

Below, for god's sake, is a link to a legible set of instructions for this clock. However, to keep the display ON, is NOT explained in the manual, so I'm just going to paste what a previous person wrote, and what she didn't say, which is how to GET TO Sound control: You need to press 'Down' while the clock is functioning. One press of 'Down' will take you to the first setting, the second press of Down will take you to the next:What most people are calling the "SOUND CONTROL", is directly tied to the display ---staying on at all time---. Q: Do the batteries act as a back-up in case the power goes out ? I set mine up with just the included power cord.

I accidently pulled the plug out when plugging in my iPad. When I noticed a couple of hours later it was still working and keeping time. The batteries worked.

Q: If im trying to use this as a replacement for the good old standby cable box to tell time at a glance, is this large and bright enough to do so?

Yes the characters displayed are about an inch tall, so about the same as those on the cable boxes I've used in the past, I'm using the usb port on my current cable box to power my clock.
