What does this actually do. i keep reading it and all i keep seeing is mining. what happens when this is used. i dont understand?

It's useful when you have a remote computer that you don't want to have a monitor connected to, but you want to connect with remote software that connects to the current local session like Teamviewer. Without this you will get a default 640x480 resolution that you can't change.

My laptop has a intel hd 4000 graghic chip with hdmi.should this work or get a 2k?

I'm not sure why you would even do that it doesn't make sense because a laptop has a screen...

Why does half the screen All the icons in everything become invisible when I plug this in

It could be the settings in the vga that causes this.

Should this be detected as a display on a macbook pro? mine is not...
