A Hot Topic with Huge Potential
Responsive web design, in my opinion, represents huge potential for business web development. It can be so easy to view it as just another buzzword, more marketing jargon if you may but if you take the time to understand what is means for web development, you will see its pretty hot with huge potential. Many people, I suspect, are unclear on what exactly Responsive web design is, what does it mean. Indeed, I thought ' ooh not another book on fluid layouts '. Far from it, I can assure you. The author moves through a well worked out movie website project to show that Responsive web design is not a huge single monolithic thing but instead a series of existing technologies ( HTML5, CSS3 ) and design techniques ( flexible grid layout, flexible images and media and media queries ). The majority of the book naturally focuses on HTML5 and CSS3 and the powerful enhancements these technologies bring forth. In addition to their application in Responsive web design the author explores new HTML5 elements ( the semantically meaningful nav element and many more for example ) and shows the vast improvements in CSS3 aesthetics. I particularly loved the simplicity of Text Shadows but we also have Transitions, Transformations and Animations. All very, very useful stuff.HTML5 and CSS3 are maturing technologies, best to keep this in mind. Hence, to make available the majority of their features in older browsers such as Internet Explorer 6,7 and to a lesser extent 8, not to mention running your site across multiple browsers, a JavaScript tool called Modernizr is required. The last chapter explores this tool.Readers should have familiarity with previous versions of HTML markup and CSS selectors to gain maximum benefit. The book is really a joy to read and perhaps a launching pad for interesting developments yet to come. Wonderful stuff.

Great information, but poorly edited
The author is clearly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the subject. The text is clear, to the point and even entertaining.I have to ask, though, if the text was edited at all, or even proofread. The text is filled with basic grammatical errors that I can understand finding their way into a draft, but which should have been picked up by the editor. They all appear to be minor, at least so far, but they still detract from the overall quality of the book.I bought the Kindle version, so I don't know if the print version got a better going over than the ebook. Unfortunately, this is a problem that I run up against regularly with ebooks, especially ebooks from established publishers.Back when I was in journalism school, one of the first things we learned was that our copy needed to be as grammatically clean as we could make it. If you weren't careful enough to ensure that your writing was correct, the thinking went, the reader would ultimately question the validity of your reporting. I think the same principle applies here.

Responsive Web Design with HTML5 & CSS3
Responsive web design is about coding your web page(s) so they display optimally in a browser whether it be a cell phone, tablet, or your home PC.If you are familiar with HTML and CSS then you will find this book an easy read filled with excellent examples and many screen shots. Although it is an easy read the author covers all subjects in detail which also makes it an excellent reference.A subject that I found particularly useful was his coverage on making older browsers HTML5 compliant with the use of a javascript plugin called "modernizr.js" Until I read this book my impression was that "modernizr" simply adds a number of HTML5 tags that are missing from older browsers. The book goes on to explain that moderinizr also adds a bundle of browser-dependant classes to the <html> tag and provides numerous examples on how to use these classes to create lightweight webpages. This alone is worth the price of the book. Each topic is dealt with to an acceptable depth with web-references if you wish to delve deeper. The book does justice to the title ... highly recommended.

Good overview but examples don't always work
It's a good book but a little difficult to build some of the examples. The video handling example on pages 126 and 127 does not work! And the main project's CSS doesn't show all the code necessary to build the example page until nearly half-way into the book, i.e. the flag banner t the top and bottom of the page.

Great Read for Learning Modern Front-End Design Techniques
Ben Frain's book is by far the best book that I have read on the subject of HTML5 and CSS3, and the first that I have read that directly addresses Responsive Design. The book has a logical progression to it, and it provides practical examples throughout. To accompany the book, Frain has built a fictional case study site, which is extremely helpful, especially with the CSS3 animations, transitions, and transformations. Whether or not, you read the book cover to cover, there are chapters worth reading in isolation. For example, Frain's chapters on Media Queries and Fluid layouts were extremely helpful, even if you are already familiar with some of the HTML5 and CSS3 techniques that he presents in later chapters. He does an excellent job at suggesting best practices as well as prioritizing where to draw the line in terms of cross-browser support. Frain does a great job at justifying why he would choose to use HTML5, CSS3, and responsive design techniques in projects, within the context of graceful degrations and progressive enhancement. I would suggest the book for designers of all levels. Even if you are just starting to learn HTML and CSS, this would be a great book to add to your collection, because of it presents practical and modern design solutions.
