Very large and bright light. Before the light, the minute the sun went down, flying insects of every kind would gather in my shop in such masses, it be ame impossible to work. I installed the light 50 yards from the shop. The zapping was a lightening show. It attracted so many bugs, I couldn't sit outside to watch it. On the second night, there were no flying bugs to be found. I didnt bother to turn the zapper on. Now I turn it on about every 4th night to rid the entire area of flying bugs. This light is awesome!

This Flowtron MC9000 is one of my favorite products. What a BEAST of a bug zapper, finally we can BBQ in the back yard by the pool and be free of nuisance bugs! I tried several different top-selling bug zappers which were either too weak or failed prematurely, until I did some more research and found this one. This is the best out there because: — It is the most powerful residential bug zapper (and even stronger than most commercial units). The grid fries and smokes the bugs, nothing escapes once they fly near the grid. Although it is a max 120W unit, my watt meter measured a very reasonable 84W power draw at rest. — It blends in nicely with the patio and landscape with the green top and bottom. From a distance it looks kind of like a hanging plant container, so it is pleasing to look at. The UV glow provides some ambient lighting at night. — It has a simple electronic component design which is very serviceable (people talk about having their Flowtrons for decades). It has 3 old school transformers for the lights, and another larger transformer for the electric grid. It also has bulb starters. That’s about it. Very simple and not much to fail (keep it simple = reliable). It is easy to replace the power cord if you want a longer or different type of cord (I swapped it out with a twisty green cloth lamp cord so it would be decorative and low-profile woven into the hanging chain). — It holds 3 Octenol cartridges at the bottom for enhanced mosquito attraction. The cartridges are super easy to replace since they just snap in. I found a pile of dead mosquitoes starting after the first night I turned it on. — Replacement bulbs are readily available (I had a hard time finding bulbs for the other brand bug zappers). — Made in the USA! Other things to note - you can remove the bottom green shroud and reduce it by several inches in height if you want, since that’s just to provide space for the bugs to pile up if you place it on a table, and for decorative purposes. I kept it on because I like the green look instead of seeing a black bottom. I experimented with the distance from the patio stairs and found that I can avoid the swarm of bugs if I keep it at least 6 feet away from the walking areas. I keep it about 30 - 50 feet away from gathering/BBQ areas. I put this on a Kasa WiFi outdoor timer so it turns on one hour before sunset and off at midnight. I highly recommend this bug zapper! You won’t find a better one if you’re looking for something powerful and effective for a residential back yard.

Since 2016, I've had 5 of the BK-40D zappers (Found Here) - and they've worked extremely well; other than the fact that they're unbelievably unreliable. The worst part is that the light doesn't ever burn out - but it stops zapping mosquitoes. As a result, the only real way to know it's broken is to wait until you start getting eaten by the little buggers. When the most recent one stopped zapping, I decided to search for something better and ran across this model from the same company. It's only been a couple of months; but this MC-9000 has already outlasted the last two BK-40D units. It seems like a much higher quality product, so my hopes are high - and I'll post here if it ends up failing (other than standard maintenance, like the lights needing to be replaced). In addition to seeming like a higher quality product: - it's significantly brighter and seems to cover a larger area as a result - The way the attractant attaches to the bottom is simpler, although it could use a better explanation in the manual - It doesn't clog up as quickly Overall, even though this was more expensive than the BK-40D, it will be worth it if it lasts. I'll definitely update this review immediately if it fails for any reason. [*** Update 10/11/2018 ***] It's been a couple more months, and this zapper is still going strong. We're having a wet fall, so it's getting some good use. Anyway, I figured I'd tack one more observation that I learned recently onto this review. The attractant does wonders for pulling in additional mosquitoes at night so they can be zapped - but I noticed that it continued to pull them in during the day as well. The result was that we would start to get quite a few mosquitoes in the area of our zapper before dusk. By morning they're all dead, and the process starts over. To fix this I purchased a dusk-to-dawn timer (Found Here) so the zapper only runs at night. That prevents the attractant from warming up and attracting mosquitoes throughout the day - and our yard is almost completely free of the little buggers now.

I bought 1 of these back in 2022. It’s still going strong! Other than replacing the scent containers underneath every 3 weeks the unit has been almost maintenance free. Over the past 3 years I have replaced the lightbulbs once due to one burning out so I replaced all 3 since I was already in there. Last fall the transformer went out and I replaced it. It wasn’t a complicated job and I did it in about 15 minutes with simple hand tools. This unit is rated for a 2 acre coverage but in my yard it is doing much better! I have it hanging about 6ft from the ground on a shepherd hook in my back yard about 125 ft behind my house. It does a fantastic job of lighting up my back yard. We have had a lot of rain lately so the mosquitoes eggs are hatching and those things are hungry. The 12 acre wheat field behind me has been a breeding ground for insects but this thing is doing its part to keep the bugs in check. The past few mornings I have had to walk out to the zapper and blow it out with my leaf blower due to the light being barely visible from it working all night. Back when I was looking at buying this model I read someone’s review comparing it to the Death Star from Star Wars. I completely understand the analogy. This thing is doing its job! My sister came for a visit and before she left she had ordered one for herself. I ordered two of the smaller 1.5 acre size models for my father and 1/2 acre size for my nephew. Several of my neighbors have inquired about my big zapper due to bright blue light behind my house over the past few years. The neighbors have since purchased the 1.5 or the 2 acre models for their own yards. I’m extremely satisfied! If mine dies tonight I will definitely order another asap if I can’t repair it!

This review is to HOPEFULLY get the attention of the manufacturer! The bug zapper is great and performs as described BUT with a dangerous flaw! I always before putting and outdoor electrical device through an inspection and double check the AC connections to make sure they are insulated to avoid and trouble weather wise! Boy, am I glad I did. EVERY single wire connection was fastened with a screw wire nut which is not unheard of but there was no weather proofing so I decided I would put on each connection some heat shrink tubing to seal it. That is when I started to see each wire nut that was touched had one or more of the wires just fall out of the wire nut. When I went to unscrew each wire nut the wires were not even twisted 1/8th of a turn. Every wire nut connection was found the same way. I ended up twisting the wire bundles and putting on a closed end insulated crimp connector and then heat shrinking the connection. It is a shame that there is NO QC inspection to be able to catch such poor and dangerous wiring.

Zap Zap bugs are gone! So glad I decided to spend the money for this product. As other reviewers have stated, I too have gone many years buying the $25-$40 dollar bug zappers that just don't last or do the job as well as this monster Bug Zapper. You only need ONE of these to protect your entire back yard or barn or wherever you're hanging out at night and getting bit by mosquitos. I hung mine off the garage about 20 feet or so from my back porch and once dusk comes the zapping begins. It does light up your back yard but that's okay with me. The lights have a blue-ish tint and cast a nice glow actually. Be sure to buy extra mosquito attractant to replace every month by simply sticking the cartridge onto the metal frame. Don't listen to those who proclaim that it doesn't attract mosquitos because the natural science doesn't support what this product does... which is to emanate light that's surrounded by a electrical grid that attracts insects either to the light or the attractant and they get zapped. period.. I went from a mosquito haven to a bug free back yard thanks to this Product. Worth every penny. Rain is NOT an issue for this sturdy-quality made product. I took the advice of other reviewers and just removed the bottom (black plastic) part therefore eliminating the job of emptying it out when it fills with rain and dead bugs.The insects get zapped and if not totally turned to dust, they fall straight down onto the ground and grabbed by the closest lizard anxiously waiting below. Initially, I kept the unit turned on 24/7 for a month or so, now its plugged into a dusk/dawn timer. I have nothing negative to report. Very Very happy with this Flowtron 2 Acre Residential Bug Fighter!

As of 7/16/2020 .. I just unboxed and replaced my old broken Bug zapper, This thing is huge and heavy , it is so heavy it is bending my Shepherd Hook that I had my old bug zapper on. As far as I can tell it is made very well s. I will update after a couple days. Let see if it can keep my 5 star rating. 7/18/2020 update .. I have been impressed with all the bugs it killed last night and I didn't have to blow out like my older bug zapper 8/16/2021 This bug zapper is still going strong, I plugged into to a smart outdoor plug, so I can turn it off when it's raining hard. I plan on ordering another one since they came down in price. I do wish they worked better attacking green headed flies. 6/7/2023 It's still going and worth every penny, I did have to replace the bulbs and starter bulbs with Leviton 13889 Fluorescent Starter, FS-25 and Leviton 380 REPL by 002-00380 7-3-2023 Well it too heavy for the plastic holding the unit up. Contact flowtron to get a replacement top. see photo, Great Customer service. and they are me a sending a replacement top.

We bought this midway through the mosquito season last year because we were sick of losing our yard to those nasty little pests, and we wanted to declare absolute war. This is the weapon that stemmed the invasion and made our deck usable again. This year we got a jump start at the beginning of the season, and we almost never see them now. Maybe one or two bites a night. Bait is key. Use what is included and get extras. We also zip-tie a Lurex cartridge to it to attract the daytime mosquitoes in addition to the nighttime variety. We have ours on a smart switch to be awake during dawn and dusk to ensure our yard is guarded during peak biting times. Keep it supplied, keep it on, and let it do its magic. Customer service was great when I needed it. At the end of the season last year, I found that one of the sockets was burning out bulbs, so I contacted the company and made a warranty claim. Within days, they scheduled a UPS pickup right at my door, and shortly after, a brand new one was delivered. They gave me no grief at all and couldn't have made it easier. Finally, a word of advice... As fun as it is to watch mosquitoes get zapped, don't stare at it for too long because it might keep you WIDE awake at light. I made the mistake of doing this on a couple of occasions, and my melatonin production just shut down with enormous force. Woke up each time at 1AM and didn't sleep again until 7AM. I have a pair of blue blocker glasses now for when I want to gaze upon the vengeful destruction. Enjoy, just not too much.

I bought 2 of these for my backyard, what today would be considered a large backyard in a residential neighbourhood. They work as designed when following the instructions! And they work 10/10. The first day I set these up I had to shut them off at night for the first night to not disturb the neighbours who had their windows open from the constant zapping! Only the first night. It take’s between 7 and 10 days for this zapper to really clear the area as it works in the principle of reducing the population by not letting them reproduce. I also experimented twice with where they were placed which made a difference. Nothing is 100% in eliminating the mosquitos, but this one is very close. The pictures show the location … they are temporarily set on a ladder as I look for poles to hang the FlowTrons on to make a more effective and cleaner looking setup. They should be 2 to 3 feet higher than currently shown, yet they are still working well!

Super effective bug zapper. I have 5 of these now on our 2 acre property just north of Muskoka and they all still work after two years. The video was taken on year two 10:26pm (sunset 9:12pm) I have them all over the property spaced quite evenly and by far the most effective location by10fold is the one I have at the waterfront. At the waterfront it also eradicates blackflies at sunset as they all venture over to the bug zappers as the last light before going dormant for the night. The bug zappers are not completely clog free as claimed but blowing them out with compressed air cans or an air compressor works great. One of them caused a shepherd hook to snap during a storm and it cracked the bottom plastic, however it still works great and did not damage any bulbs. I only wish it was black instead of green. Mosquitoes tend to prefer to camp out around darker areas and they are also attracted to heat which black will be warmer around sunset. I was thinking about spray painting them. I couple my bug zappers with blue bug balls with insect sticky to catch deer flies (extremely effective by the way) and mosquito dunks to target mosquito breeding areas. I have all of these flowtron bug zappers hooked up to a lutron outdoor smart timer that comes on 1.5 hours before sunset to save bulb life and electricity. Now I do have one bug zapper with the bottom collector and it does have its benefits. If you let the bugs just rot in there it will attract regular houseflies to their deaths during the day like you won’t believe, so I run one all day for that purpose but I generally prefer the ones that don't have to be emptied. I fill the bottoms with 3 octenol mosquito attractants once per year. I find it isn’t necessary to replace it more frequently.

It works great. Can walk on walk way now without eating bugs
