I use Clear Tar Gel as a medium to "oil up" my canvas and paint into it with thick pigment. This is the clearest of all the mediums when wet (most mediums can be quite opaque or at least extremely milky if still slightly translucent). Clear Tar Gel is still milky when wet but starts to clear up a bit earlier than most mediums and you can still see your underpainting if applied with a thin, even coat.Clear Tar Gel dries extremely transparent, almost like a clear resin, and gives a lush, wet look when used as a glaze.

Works great, very small amount of paint ration needed to achieve liquidity.
