Since 2012, the German ensemble Diogenes Quartet have devoted themselves to recording all of Schuberts music for string quartet. Already released as individual volumes to high acclaim, they are now available to purchase together, setting Schuberts later masterpieces alongside his earlier works and revealing the genius he was at such a young age. Additionally, the quartet have worked with Christian Starke, an expert in Schuberts music, who has sensitively completed two of the composers fragments, allowing the listener to fully appreciate the astonishing potential these short pieces contain. While the four late quartets have always been considered shining examples of Schuberts mastery of the genre, his earlier works for string quartet written as a young teenager have at times been overlooked in the past. They were clearly intended for a familiar, domestic setting rather than the concert hall, and the Diogenes Quartets sensitive rendition draws the listener in, recreating the intimate setting and drawing out the sense of lyricism already present in Schuberts lines. The Quartet were highly praised by Fanfare for their immaculate execution, complemented by genuine emotional engagement and real feeling for Schuberts unique modes and moods of musical expression in Volume 2, with the reviewer Jerry Dubins stating that once complete, this recording of Schuberts string quartets would be the one to have. This quality boxset certainly attests to that claim. This set presents the complete string quartets by Franz Schubert, including the completion of two unfinished movements, by Christian Starke. Schuberts string quartets span his whole creative lifetime. The early quartets are firmly rooted in the classical Viennese style, charming, fresh, lyrical and witty, the later quartets (Rosamunde, Death and the Maiden, G major) speak a deep, dramatic and sometimes grim language, full of Weltschmerz, hope and despair. The German Diogenes Quartet have been delving deep into the world of Schubert over the past few years. Critics (Fanfare and other magazines) have praised their genuine emotional engagement and real feeling for Schuberts unique modes and moods of musical expression, immaculate execution. Excellent and extensive liner notes by musicologist and producer Christian Starke. Review: Beautiful Playing and Excellent Recording - This is a great set of Schubert's string quartets, and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised at just how good both the performance and the recording were executed for this release. If you are a Schubert fan, or simply want a collection of truly beautiful music to listen to, this is your set! The performance of the Diogenes Quartet is magnificent, and the recording was made in an outstanding manner to pick up all four instruments in the best way possible. I find myself returning again and again to this set due to its sheer beauty, and can't recommend it highly enough. A great part of any Schubert collection! Review: Great CD - Classical music isn't just a bunch of notes. The performance of the music is just as important. Some things can't be learned; a classical musician either has an innate talent for music interpretation or he/she doesn't. The musicians in the Diogenes Quartet are wonderful. Schubert would be pleased! Well worth buying!

Schubert's Complete String Quartets - Excellent Performance and Bargain Price!
For years, I owned just the late string quartets of Schubert, but like Mozart and others he was a musical wonder even when very young (dying at 31 years old!); so I was anxious to hear his early string works and am not disappointed - the Diogenes Quartet are consistently excellent from start to end. Fanfare magazine praised each release stating the series is one of the best, and certainly for a complete set, there will not be much if any competition. Highly recommended and deserving a top rating.

Beautiful music. Death and the Maiden is gorgeous
This is a great journey from youthful composition to beautiful and innovative music. Too bad he died young.

Beautiful music played beautifully.
This is beautiful music played with sensitivity, power, and grace. I wanted a truly complete version of the quartets (this one has some music that has rarely if ever been included in the few available 'complete' sets) played by an outstanding ensemble that was beautifully recorded. I got all that in this set by the Diogenes Quartet. Check out the editorial review which summarizes the outstanding features of this set in greater detail. If you love Schubert, you'll find this is a set to cherish for a lifetime. Thank you, Diogenes Quartet! (Their recordings of Bruch's chamber music are also wonderful!).
