Q: Does the blue color stand out or does it look black?

Blue doesn’t stand out because of the ratio of golden to blue. Golden is more. But it doesn’t look black though if u see color it will appear blue.

Q: Is it microwave safe?

No, this set has gold trim. Anything with gold trim or other metal cannot be microwaved because it causes arcing. Arcing would ruin the gold and be hard on the microwave. You could microwave a beverage in a microwave safe container to pour into the cups though. The set is thicker than I expected, but I find it beautiful and am anticipating using it.
