Q: Will this work as an external tiro drive?

not sure what a tiro drive is. i am using this in a synology enclosure as a network backup drive. it is a great drive.

Q: Will this work in a Tivo Bolt?

Well, this drive WON'T work IN a TiVo, but it will work WITH a TIVO as an external drive, if you buy an enclosure and cables for it. This is a 3.5" drive, and TiVo Bolt is sized for a 2.5" drive. This larger 3.5" drive will not fit inside the TiVo box. My TiVo Bolt Vox 500GB came with a 500GB WD 2.5" AV drive. A recent search of the web seems to indicate that WD does not sell a 2TB AV drive in a 2.5" form factor. If this was a 2.5" drive, it would be perfect, but it's not 2.5". If you want to use an external drive, that's fine, but you will have to snake the cable out thru a hole in the box somewhere. Many people have done that, and it will work, but then you don't have a nice neat internal solution.

Q: New drives like this need to be partitioned and formatted before use, correct?

Yes. The format is operating system dependent so the drives ship in a condition that requires formatting. And, of course, formatting a drive requires one or more partitions.Windows makes this a no-brainer exercise. Linux is a bit more demanding but the installer makes it relatively easy. NAS drives vary from doing the formatting when the drive is first installed to selecting the type of drive configuration (RAID, standard, etc., etc.) you want and clicking go. SBCs (RPI, Android, etc., etc.) are another matter altogether.

Q: Would this be a good Tivo Roamio drive? If not, is there a better one out there?

I purchased two of these drives for my TiVo Roamios. They worked great and are the same model as the original drive in the TiVo Roamio Plus (just 2TB instead of 1TB). $48 was a bargain. The AV-GP are designed for streaming DVRs/surveillance. The Reds are great and will work fine - but they are designed for NAS systems not DVRs.
