It should release. Once released from the unit you an pull the propeller out of the filter. **Q: Will it leave the pulp in tack and remove peel and seeds?** A: Yes,,it separates the seeds and the skin.After the machine separates , I reload the skin and seeds again and get a thicker purée from it...best investment for jarring tomatoes!!!! **Q: Is there room to put a bowl under the unit to catch the pulp? And do you recommend cooking the tomatoes or can they be put in raw (after washing)?** A: Yes, there's room to put a tray to catch pulp.
