The strap is embroidered, so it's not exactly smooth; it has texture to it. However, it's not frayed at the edges if that's your concern.

wow can't really remember - thinking it came with two because I had ordered a set and felt they were too big whereas the ones that came with this strap were perfect and I was able to use them on two ukeleles - but then after putting the strap on I preferred it without the strap - I guess it depends on how you're playing whether standing or sitting - the strap does help with certain chords being easier to finger because it holds the ukulele in place such as Bb and Gm7 -
