Your Kingdom for My Horse: When to Exchange in Chess

Good book on learning when to trade off pieces
Nice book on learning when to exchange. Early in my chess career I would just exchange but not think whether it was good or bad. Some exchange concepts are easy, but there are situations that are not as obvious, so this book will give examples of those situtation and what to consider when thinking of a trade. This book will help your planning skills in the middle game and help you get a better endgame.

Andrew Soltis writes good chess books
This review is to counter negative reviews of the Kindle edition. Poor execution and rendering of the Kindle editions of books is a problem endemic with Amazon, the producer of Kindle. This has nothing to do with the content or quality of the original book itself. Andrew Soltis generally writes good chess books. In fact this books treats a topic which gets scant treatment in the chess literature. Certainly there are no books entirely devoted to extensive coverage of the topic of exchanging that I am aware of. In that regard this is a welcome and important addition to the chess literature.

it is horrible to navigate
i got the kindle edition since they were out of stock; it is horrible to navigate; you never know whether you missed a page or not. Answers to the quiz questions at the end of each chapter have yet to be found by me. WAIT for the paper copy. Soltis is a very good writer, but the kindle ed is too disjointed and disorganized to get anything out of the material. Forget the kindle version and get the hard copy. You will be glad you did. The best kind of chess book
I bought this on a whim being oversupplied with opening books lately. It's a real gem: one of those chess books that you can read like a page turner.Entire games are given, if you want to play though them, and helpful diagrams show the key positions so well that you can follow without a board for the most part if you're able to envision a couple of moves in sequence.Lessons are divided into themes such as QxQ, RxR, B vs. N, etc. and further subdivided into motifs which can be read through in a minute or two each, so that you can pick it up at any time for a couple of minutes or read a whole chapter if you have an hour.I can't praise the examples given too highly. Soltis has really compiled a quality collection of games to make each point, drawing from the classics to the very recent. Kramnik and Karpov feature prominently, as they were masters of exchange and building initiatives, but there are lots of others. This is really the kind of rare chess book (like Silman's) where you pick up much more than the actual lessons by osmosis and that is such a pleasure to read that you will probably read it twice at least.

A really good addition to your positional library!
Really like the format of the book; it reads easily, has just enough diagrams whereas if you wanted to read it without a board you could, and I also like the quizzes at the end of each chapter. It would be nice if maybe at the very end of the book if he had a bunch of random positions where you didn't know what the "theme" was and you were trying to come up with the plan or favorable exchange of pieces but without knowing which pieces you should or should not exchange. The way these quizzes are now (and trust me, they are still quite instructive) you know for example that in the NxN chapter, you're looking for some N trade...

Very enjoyable to read!
This book is very instructive! You will never look at an exchange on the board casually again.

Ton of rules and advices
I'm half way reading the book. Until now, many rules and advices given that, help to make decisions quicker and accurate.Suitable for intermediate and advanced players. Helping chess board (or 2) needed because full games are displayed and sometimes, previous moves are reviewed after a certain technical passage is displayed. Hope further buyers of this book get as much or more than i am, until now.

A must-have for intermediate players!
When DO I decide to trade pieces? This can often be a daunting task, especially when playing against a very aggressive or passive opponent, or a general novice who does NOT understand this concept at all!I just received this book, but so far, with a medium glance over, it IS EXACTLY what I was looking for! BATFORD Chess books are awesome anyway, and this is a most-welcomed addition to MY library, and I think maybe many others as well... Covers sample game stages and examples of exchanges where strategy or "room to move", with small advantages, are warranted. This "balance" in my personal games has been a bit of an enigma, especially since I am now crossing into a higher level (approaching the Advanced/Expert category), and one of my weaker areas in my personal game. If this applies to you, then this book should have a LOT of what you were looking for. Recommended!
