I kind of stumbled onto this product. So... what is it actually used for?

Magnet Fishing..... it is the thrill of not knowing what you will find.. find a bridge or public landing ..hook the rope onto the magnet and throw it into the water/river...and see what you pull out..... .if nothing else, you are taking things out of the water that should not be there

can i take this on a plane?

Don't know but carry-on would not be an option.

Will this work in saltwater?

Yes but be aware that saltwater will corrode and rust your magnet alot faster then freshwater. Also saltwater may weaken the strength of your magnet.
