The metal base simply screws on to a canning jar or mayonnaise jar; feeding the chicks is fast and the food stays neat and easily accessible. It's especially nice for chick starter feed because of the finer consistency of the feed, but also works fine with both crumble and pellet style feed. Lots of the locally available chicken supplies are made of plastic, but this appears to be well designed and constructed to last virtually indefinitely. Best of all, my new chicks took to it immediately, each one quickly finding her own special feeding hole!
