hang it with a string. the side facing north direction is north pole. and side facing south direction is south pole.

Will this magnet detect magnetic rocks?

magnets attract materials that are iron based, if there is a rock with a magnetic flux they will attract each other. If you drag a magnet on soil you will find that it will attract the iron based materials (mostly in a powder form). I'm not really sure what you are asking, I hope this information is helpful.
