Q: I have outdoor wifi cameras 170 feet away from the router. do i place the tp link outdoors halfway between or do i place it near the router?

I have a similar requirement, but for Shelly1 WiFi relays to control a remote gate. I ended up with the extender in a waterproof box high up under the eve of the house, about 30 feet from the indoor WiFi router. It works fine. So go with height to reach 170 feet.

Q: Do you have to plug an Ethernet cable into it to work?

You can. You can use an Ethernet cable to set the extender up. Once you set it up, you can move the extender to another part of the house minus the Ethernet cable.

Yes, it’s kind of hard to explain. It took me a while to figure it out. I plugged one extender in, set it up to my main wifi. After that, I unplugged it (after many failed attempts at trying to get 2 to link up). I plugged the second one in, with the same setup. This is where it got tricky. You have to go to your “devices”. It will say -main network-tether-clients. Click on main network, tap reset main network, it will go through the prompts, select the extender wifi. I had to do that with each “device”. Then plug where needed, and it should work.

Q: will this unit help stop my wifi kicking off and trying to get differentiations network?

I dont know what a "differentiations" network is. But I called Apple since my computer kept going to "MOM WIFI" , but my Mom's Wifi does not have the range to reach my apartment, which is about 50 feet away! So I called Apple and the Tech guy said I have to delete "MOM WIFI" from the Network List. I said I DONT see it on the list. Apple said there are TWO lists, and it's on the "List of Remembered Networks" deep inside the Computer, since my computer remembers when I lived with Mom, it was on the MOM WIFI Network! So I went into "Advanced Settings" and deleted MOM WIFI from the List Of Remembered Networks! Now, my computer only goes on MY network "Bob's iPhone Network" (I use my iPhone as a "Wifi Hot Spot"! I hope this info helps you!
