Twisted Hoards: Magic and Unusual Treasure Troves for Four Against Darkness Paperback – April 13, 2022

I bought this supplement for my Four Against Darkness games and am glad of it! The book gives you a varied collection of more in-depth magic items to add to your dungeon dives. These new items are mixed in with old standbys like Wand of Sleep and Potion of Healing, so you don't miss out on them by using this book.The possession of these new items can give a character more flavor. I have a wizard with the new Advid"s Chaotic Spell Case, an item that gives forth spell scrolls once per adventure. That spurned him to go for the Scroll Librarian milestone from Wayfarers and Adventurers.This is one of those books that should be a core book in every 4AD player's collection.

This is the magic treasure version of the twisted-line books from 4ad. The twisted series offer more randomized roleplay experiences ontop of the standard core book. Twisted Minions (a separate book), for example, can be rolled on any minion encounter to spice up that encounter with new narrative and mechanic bits. Twisted Final Fights (my favorite this line) offers new campaign bosses with some text to help build off of and create your own campaign narratives from. This product, specifically, is for rolling magic treasure. You do not need the other twisted books to enjoy this product, for example, let's say you've played 4ad core for awhile and really enjoy rolling magic treasure BUT want to be really surprised and want rare magic treasure that most likely you will not encounter again in a campaign, this is the book for you! You could always, before playing an adventure, roll on this book, read the what the magic treasure is, then create your own narrative/quest storyline with this treasure. Maybe before entering a dungeon there is a 1 in 6 chance that this special treasure will be with the final boss. Maybe the quest isn't to fight a final boss, but to find this treasure.

You don’t need this book to play Four Against Darkness, but should you keep it handy to add fun and interesting treasures and rewards? The short answer is definitely yes. This is a simple table of unique, interesting and maybe even magical items for you to roll on when your party deserves something special for a unique treasure. Very well thought out items add cool new aspects to the game. When you buy this book don’t read it. Instead roll on the tables to be surprised at what you will find inside. It also adds some new mapping rules on the last two pages adding some extra challenge to the game. Highly recommended.

Unlike the other books in this series, this one seems to have got mixed up at the printers. Fascinating account by Yves Dupont of the confession of Mikolaj the antipriest. If you're into that sort of thing.Not so much if you're expecting the Hoards and Troves supplement to 4AD.
