A fantastic practical book on learning MMA techniques for the ring and street combat.
As someone who has been passionately involved in numerous martial art and combative systems (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate-Do, Boxing, Kick boxing, Krav Maga, American Combatives, Mixed Martial Arts, Police Defensive Tactics, Target Focus training and many weapon systems) for more than 7 decades I have read literally 100s of books on these topics. I recently purchased this truly exceptional 112 page large format soft cover book (Mixed Martial Arts Fighting Techniques: Apply the modern training methods used by MMA Pros by Danny Indio) and it takes a little different approach to learning these fighting techniques. The introduction explains the Jeet Kune Do Approach, which is the combat system Bruce Lee developed. This unique book is an excellent guide to learning MMA techniques for not just sport purposes, but more importantly, it also shows how to use these techniques for actual street combat and self-defense, which is my personal interest. It also includes techniques and tactics that are illegal to use in an MMA match but can be used in a combative street fight where your life may be at stake. This excellent book also goes into depth on knife fighting and defense because the knife is the most common street weapon used on the street and in most areas is also legal to carry. There is also a DVD video included showing many of the techniques. This book is organized into 9 detailed chapters with each section filled with color photographs the topics covered include the following:Understanding strategy and concepts, adopting proper stance and movement, mastering the upper body strikes and defenses, mastering the lower body strikes and defenses, training to survive a knife fight, owning the clinch, becoming a takedown artist, becoming a ground fighting pro, and the complete warrior workout. My only real concern is the same with any book or manual on the martial arts, Combatives and self-defense. Unless you have vast previous experience in actual hands on training with an instructor you cannot master many of these techniques just reading the book. There is nothing that can take the place of a competent expert instructor showing you the details of learning any martial art or self-defense system. However, I highly recommend this book for anyone who is presently training in a martial art or combative system. I love this book because it is an excellent resource book showing unconventional real street combat methods other MMA books do not cover. In this respect, it is a must read book for anyone into street self-defense combat.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Tactical Principles of the most effective Combative Systems).

How to Survive, not Score Points
I confess at the outset to being a hardcore boxing fan, and not being too interested in MMA. I also have to confess, though, after what I've seen in the army and as a civilian (and as a boxing fan) that boxing cannot compete with mixed martial arts when it comes to the practical (and sometimes crazy) realities of a street fight. This is for two basic reasons, which should be obvious but which I'll state for the purposes of this review: A boxer can only attack with his hands, while both opponents are standing. Most street fights are dirty, and can involve everything from guns to broken bottles, and these encounters usually end up on the ground (which isn't as soft as the canvas of a boxing ring or a mat in a combatives class). It's worth pointing out that even the "Baddest Man on the Planet," Mr. "Iron" Mike Tyson himself, broke some of the metacarpals in his hands just from slugging a Jherri Curl juice-saturated Mitch "Blood" Green in an altercation outside a nightclub."Mixed Martial Arts Fighting Techniques" doesn't mess around, waste time, make false claims about self-defense, or have much truck with Steven Segal-style phony tough guy heroics that would mostly likely get you sent to a hospital, the morgue, or leave you standing tall before the man in black robes in a courtroom if you were to implement those direct-to-DVD stunts in a real brawl. The book is well organized, covering ground game techniques, disarming a foe with a knife, various choke-holds, and a slew of other moves and drills to help the reader prepare to the best of their ability to survive a potentially lethal hand-to-hand encounter. Photo demonstrations are featured throughout, explaining the sequence of moves necessary to complete an action in a step-by-step manner that made it easy for me, a non-expert in the field, to follow. Recommended.
