Samsung BD-F5700 Wi-Fi Blu-Ray Player (2013 Model)

EDITED 1/30/2015 I just discovered something AMAZING ... I would increase my rating to six stars if I could. THIS PLAYER HAS A MULTI-DISC MEMORY! I was watching a Christmas movie when my brother came for a visit, I paused my movie at 0:55:15. My brother brought Addams Family, so I ejected my Xmas movie and we watched Addams Family, then I ejected it and returned it to him. Two days later, I put my Christmas movie back in, and it resumed playing at 0:55:15, even though the player had been off for the prior 36 hours. Hey, Samsung, this is a great feature. I love it. I wonder how many discs it might remember (but I'm not going to try to test it.) I STILL AGREE WITH MY PRIOR REVIEW: This is a wonderful player. I have it and my Amazon Fire TV box hooked up to my 40" bare bones LCD HD television, so I have a choice of watching movies and shows with streaming, or I can pop in one of my growing collection of discs. Plus, because it's WiFi enabled, I can stream content through the Blu-Ray Player, too, so I can move this to another TV in the house and have streaming content on two different televisions. I have not had any problems with it, except that I need to learn the rather complicated remote control. This is the first disc-player remote control I've ever seen with more than 44 buttons. (It has 45). But I can't cut it down in the ratings for that, because I'm sure that many younger users take to the complicated tech more readily than I do. (I'm 62 and I consider myself to be pretty tech-savvy, but things do require learning.) 2015 UPDATE: I'm now 63. I still haven't learned more than a few buttons on that remote control. I discovered that there is actually an eject button on the player itself. I just hadn't noticed it because I left the plastic circle in place covering the power, eject button, etc. BUT I found a nice trick. I have two monitors hooked up to my computer. I'm currently using my ASUS HDMI monitor in VGA mode with the computer, so I now have the Blu-Ray hooked up to its HDMI port, so I can watch Blu-Ray discs from the side of my right eye while I'm working on the computer with my other one-and-a-half eyes. I bought this Blu-Ray player to be connected to the smart TV with WiFi. This device is perfect for my purpose, because it does what I need and does not do too much extra I would not use, but I would have to pay for. Features I like and will use: * Plays Blu-Rays and many other formats perfectly. * Loads/Starts fast. * Looks stylish and small in size, which allows to place it anywhere. * Has easy to configure WiFi, which would greatly simplify software updates in the future. * Has HDMI and Coaxial Audio outputs (here I would wish for optical audio, but coaxial is almost as good and I can get audio from the TV as well). Features I do not really need from the player, because I will use smart TV for that: * It has only few applications installed and it looks like I can not add more of them. Well, TV can do it all. * It allows to get video from my desktop and to stream it to TV. Again, TV can get video from desktop directly. I would recommend this unit to anybody.

Ok here it is, i read tons of reviews on this before buying it so im going to address some of the negative comments i read and explain: Its noisy: the DVD player part of it is VERY noisy as it gets the disc set up to play after you get out of a disc menu by pressing the play the loud vibrating noise STOPS and it is followed by a very pleasantly mild whir like what you hear in most players when the start up. Its slow: the apps are slow moving because of how you have to select letters one at a time on the keyboard provided on the search menu with the arrow pad. Also menu selections are slightly delayed and the powering up takes several seconds to respond. The app accounts such as netflix dont save your info: this is BULL they absolutely do, even if the plug is pulled most of the time it still remembers. Again there may be a glitch in the machine if it is not saving your info. You have to update the system and its a pain: AGAIN total BULL i think whoever said this may have accidentally done their review on this machine when they actually purchased something else because updating the system takes MAYBE 2 or 3 minutes and is super easy, my six year old was able to do. Now for my view on other aspects. The netflix app seems to glitch out a LOT as in having problems loading or dropping out. I am convinced that it is my internet and/or the netflix server being overworked but i cannot be sure. The majority of the time it works and works well. My six year old are able to easily navigate all the channel apps and do so everyday it is not a difficult system and it plays movies even better. It is a great little system and VERY worth the money.

I don't watch TV (haven't owned one for years) but I do enjoy movies. My wife and I have watched DVDs on our laptops or on the desktop's 21-inch monitor, but we recently bought a 40-inch LED TV. The desktop computer has an HDMI port, but we decided that, since we had a bigger, better screen, we should enjoy the enhanced viewing experience offered by Blu-ray. After visiting the local Best Buy and then shopping on eBay, I located this unit on Amazon (I was specifically looking for a Samsung product). The price was right, so I bought it and it arrived very promptly. Setup couldn't have been easier - plug in the power and connect an HDMI cable to the TV and run an ethernet cable to the router (it has wireless capability, but my router is on the same shelf). One of the remote's batteries was dead, so I had to buy some more (an eventual necessity in any event), but it worked perfectly first time. Built-in services include Netflix, Hulu Plus, Youtube, and many others that I never use. With the understanding that I haven't (and most likely won't) push this item to its limits, I couldn't be more pleased with it. Samsung has a well-deserved reputation and the merchant - Beach Camera - was very prompt and friendly.

Its a nice little blu ray looks-wise. I bought it thinking it would do better than my LG blu ray with a built in wi-fi because it kept disconnecting when I was watching Cinema Now...sometimes not at all. However I was never able to truly connect with this one either to where I was trying to connect to. I expected better than this from Samsung. It works fine though otherwise and does the job. I downloaded the updates but it didn't change anything as far as the wifi. I do like the design, however, I wish it had a display that shows it is actually on. There is this teeny tiny little dot on the top far right that does sorta light up in blue when it is on, other than that, you aren't sure it is off or on sometimes. I think they should have had more of a display in the front-would have been nice. That much I miss,. I wanted a Samsung because my TV is a Samsung and both remotes work on each item and that makes it handy. Nonetheless not sure why it won't quite connect. I will try again later. My TV is a Smart Tv and it does connect well with the wifi so now I don't even need the wifi in the blu ray I suppose. EDIT: I cannot recommend this player. For some weird reason, probably at least 4 times a month it just won't play a blurau..there is a blank screen and I can't get it to play and the only solution is to unplug it completely and then plug it in again and that fixes the problem. Makes not sense at all. You can't turn it off you have to unplug. It won't even let you eject..you still have to unplug and replug again.

I bought this as an inexpensive Blue Ray for my wife's sewing room. She only watches netflix on it. I can only speak to the wireless capabilities of the unit. WiFi was easy to set up. No problems connecting at all. It was odd the second time we started this blu-ray player. I had set everything up, then brought my wife in to show her all the steps. We had to log back into everything, Wifi, Netflix, etc. The player remembered everything but our passwords. I was about to box it up and send it back if that were the case. But it's never asked for those items again. Odd, but not a problem now. I only mention it in case it happens during someon else's set up. We've had this for about 3 months without problems. Always connects, netflix looks fine. Menu makes sense, etc. No complaints. Happy wife, happy life - right?

Easy to set up with lots of options (READ the manual). It is significantly slower to start and load than our earlier SONY DVD Player but maybe that is just all that Blu-Ray and Internet Services stuff added on. The other difference is user controls: discrete buttons on our old SONY DVD player vs. the "iPod-esque" circle-thingey on this new device. We do NOT like the circle-thingey. Half the time it fails to register a finger-press and one has to actually look at it to ensure one's fingers are pressing in the right place (and then there is no perceptible feedback). The old device had discrete buttons along the upper front edge and one could operate it in the dark with their eyes closed. Samsung: please don't use the circle-thingey any more. Thanks. Four stars 'cause it works great once it gets going and the remote works just fine. UPDATE (July 2015): What a difference a year or so of use makes. The "iPod-esque" circle-thingey continues to be a source of great annoyance. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't ... sometimes it reacts if you stand too close ... other times you have to press like your life depends upon it. I can see why they've eliminated this control in later units. UNFORTUNATELY, their Marketing department over-reacted and just removed all the controls except open/close and power. STUPIDHEADS but that is for another review. Speaking of power, we're taking off a star (down to 3) because routinely one finds the player unresponsive which requires one to root around in the sound cabinet, locate the power cord, and UNPLUG IT for 10 seconds or so!! They must be using Microsoft Windows to run the player. Why else would they need a power off re-boot on a regular basis! Sheesh. At least that would explain the sluggishness. We still cannot comment on the Internet services as, frankly, we don't use any. But the announced broadcast/cable offerings for the coming season are so pitiful (really just rehashes of old vampire / monster / "reality" / sex and worse) that streaming is starting to look like an option. We'll be "bach", as he says. UPDATE (Aug 2015): We updated the firmware via the Internet as suggested in the Owner's Manual. Nothing obvious changed so any improvements must have been in the wireless features. Finally had enough of that circle-thingey. iPod users must be masochists. We've stopped renting Blu-Rays and re-connected the old Sony. What a pleasure. Discrete buttons that do what they're supposed to do, instantly. And playback is achieved just as quickly as before. It's good to be back home, so to speak. The Samsung is for sale. It works great ... if you like those sorts of controls. UPDATE (Dec 2017): Sadly, a lightening storm took out the Sony a month after the August 2015 update so (1) we had to re-connect the Samsung, and (2) learned the value of having a UPS (uninterruptable power supply) on the electronic gadgets. The good news is that since we added APC UPS's no further devices have died and it is kind of fun sitting there surfing the net when the rest of the 'hood goes dark! ^_^ Anyhow, the bad news is that the Samsung still dies after nearly every use. One puts in a disk, presses Play on that stupid circular control pad which closes the drawer, and then watch the television display go gray. So ... we added a remote switch¹ (Amazon #B001Q9EFUK) and glued the switch remote to the back of the Samsung remote. Now it works great. Put in the disc. Go sit down. Click the power off. Count to five. Click the power back on. Voila! The movie starts right up. Problem solved. Samsung should start packaging a remote power switch with their players. It sure is nice to be able to play those Blu-Rays again. I finally moved up to modern technology (disc-wise, that is) with this Blu-Ray/DVD player. It has replaced a still functioning, 10 year old Sanyo VCR/DVD combo. Setup was a snap. Plugged it into my Samsung HDTV (2008 vintage) and everything fired right up. Quickly connected via WiFi to my home network and downloaded the latest firmware. Update took but a few minutes. Nice preinstalled apps. Youtube, Netflix and Hulu Plus look sharp as a tack. DVD/Blu-Ray playback is awesome. The device itself is attractive, doesn't take up much space and is quiet. The supplied remote works both the player and TV. I bought an Amazon Basics 3' HDMI cable to plug it into my TV. Sound is provided by a Vizio 29" wall mounted sound bar. Sharing the TV is an Asus VivoPC for streaming Amazon Prime video and general web surfing/computing. Update November 30, 2014 - Over 3 months of daily use and still going strong. No problems at all. My wife is addicted to Netflix. Update 2, July 2, 2015 - Still good.

Awesome! I spent two days trying to get another brand to work, took it back and ordered this one! Plug and Play, works great! I should have known to stick to Samsung!

Great product and though advertised as used could swear it was brand new - in original packaging and easy to set up

If one of the features that you are looking for is the ability to share media such as music or video from your PC via a network, RUN, do not walk away from this one. Forget what is advertised, described on the web, on Amazon's site, in the specifications, or even printed in the manual. Any instructions such as those found on page 17 of the manual "To play content located in your PC...." are simply wrong. Can't be done according to Samsung's more senior support crew. Unfortunately the lowest tier of woefully underwhelming support people will waste hours of your time with misleading information. Any reference to sharing via a network connection is completely bogus. At one time apparently one could download Samsung software called All Share and run it on your PC. While it might have worked in the past, it does not work now with PC's. If you call Samsung they might tell you that now they use Samsung Link as the software, and that All Share has been superceded. This is wrong. This BD-F5700 model does not support Samsung Link software. If you load it on your computer, it will fail "due to an unknown error". This problem apparently extends to other "F" models. If you want this functionality you need an "H" model such as the BD-H5100 or BD-H6500 3D model. Does the device play video DVD's? Yes Does it have internet applications like Netflix? Yes, but then so do smart TV's, and smart set-top boxes, etc, etc. The manual for this particular product is among the worst I have seen. It seems to be written in language barely more comprehensible than machine code with nerdy comments like "..the player may output 48K Hz down-sampled PCM audio even though you set PCM down-sampling to OFF." I imagine most people have difficulty in interpreting this, or understand why it is important to them.
