Works great
Works great but the controller side mounting screws were useless. The screws just wobbled around inside wouldn't hold it. had to use zip ties.

Reese Towpower 74642 Brakeman Compact Brake Controller
I am an average person homeowner; without any affliation with Reese, Amazon, or any related business in towing products that this review content covers. I hope this review is an honest attempt to help others to who need a good product.I purchased this in early Sept 2012. I have a 2004 Dodge Dakota QuadCab with a 4.7 V-8 that I installed the Reese Towpower 74642 Brakeman Compact Brake Control on the front passenger side of the vehicle, for lack of space. It worked flawlessly after the easy installation. I used it in conjunction with a 2002 LoadStar Tow-Dolly that had electric brakes on the tow dolly. I towed a 2004 Chevy Malibu LS from South Dakota to Washington Maine [via Michigan(where the tow dolly was picked-up), Western Ohio, Northeastern Kentucky, Southeastern Ohio, Northwaestrn West Virgina, Southern & Eastern Pennsylvania; before continuing to Maine, some 3185 miles]. It worked throughout the Eastern mountion ranger of the USA. It was a lifesaver on a couple of occation on our trip when a bad driver would cut us off in an emergency suitation. I am glad to be able to purchase this at such a low price, on my small budget. No trailer place or even Wal-Mart could match the price of @$25.00. Most wanted $70.00 or more for a compatible product. It has a slide lever [instad of a roll switch to set the magnets on the trailer brakes] which is hard to see on first use. Just read the owners manual; it's worth the time & short reading. I will recommend it to anyone who needs a brake controller. One recommended add on with purchase is a 20-amp self-reseting fuse for this product. It just Works.
It just works. This appears to be 100% identical to a Draw-Tite branded unit. I've had one of each, as have my parents. This was bought for them to replace one that started getting flaky after nearly 20 years of use. For the price, I don't think one can complain about that life span. This is of course one of the "timer" type units...one adjustment sets how tight the brakes apply, the other how quickly they apply to that set maximum. I know some people really like the inertial type units...I guess if you tow a lot or have a much larger trailer, that may be a better bet, but this works fine for a smaller travel trailer. If you ever towed with one of the really old brake controllers that tied into the brake lines and clunked on and off between full application and no application of the brakes...this is a huge improvement! It is also nice that it is pretty small. I was able to retrofit the ash tray in an Isuzu Trooper to fit one of these into it...worked great.
