Not for a beginner. Good for some concepts, but video offers more value
This is not for a beginner. Use video or personal instruction instead. Ms. Wulff is a good writer, and her accomplishments as a fly caster are at the highest levels of competition, field practice, and personal instruction, but the nuance of fly casting just doesn't communicate well when using words.I would call this book a must-read if you are the type, like I am, who reads for increased depth of understanding about fly fishing in the context of a lifelong outdoor pursuit. Especially when the book is written by one of the great luminaries of the sport.

Great book for learning to cast a fly rod!
Very clear pictures and descriptions of various casting techniques; good for beginners. A good supplement to seeing Joan Wulff’s online videos for beginners. Totally worth it!

Her explanations of the "how" and "why" regarding fly casting has been great! It was worth every penny to me
This book by Joan Wulff was a tremendous help to my fly casting. As a "newbie" fly fisher I was having problems converting to casting fly rods as compared to baitcasters. I've been a bass fisherman for years using mostly baitcasting rigs and sometimes spinning gear but fly casting is an entirely different technique. Wulff's book helped me more than any other book, article or website. Her explanations of the "how" and "why" regarding fly casting has been great! It was worth every penny to me.

Improve your fly-fishing ability with easy to understand instructions.
Very informative since I am learning to fly-fish on my own. Explains in simple English how to cast the various casting methods and when they to use the alternative methods. Also very informative about equipment. I am learning and seeing improvement!!!

Best instruction anywhere!
A world-class caster, she is also an excellent instructor. Very detailed and understandable instructions for all the casts, including mistakes and how to fix them. Best of all the books & videos I've found.

if ever seen a better written technical instruction manual
As an engineer, I have seldom, if ever seen a better written technical instruction manual. The descriptions of each and every action to be taken are specific and explicit. At the same time it is easy to read. The casting process is taken from the most basic step to the most complex in an easy, logical sequence. Each step building upon skills learned in the prior step. An idiot could learn to cast quickly and efficiently with only this book at their disposal. I would not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone. The one addition I would suggest is a chapter comparing and contrasting her method of casting with others such as Lefty Kreh. Not necessarily which one is best but might one method be easier under certain conditions or easier on the body (rotator cuff and tendonitis come to mind). This goes beyond the intended scope of her book but with her exemplary writing style I think it would be a good addition.

Excellent introduction to fly casting
Excellent introduction to fly casting, written for someone new to the field. Wulff's writing style is clear and lucid, often easier to understand than some other big name experts. She answers many questions about why things in fly fishing are done a certain way. Invaluable advice for women fisherman frequently absent from other books. Highly recommended.

I would also recommend checking out her video
Joan has a spectacular teaching style that really comes to life in this book. I would also recommend checking out her video, its a bit dated, as one can tell by the clarinet soundtrack... but incredibly informative and worth watching with a notebook.

Amazing fly casting book.
As a fisherman of somewhat advanced years i have always held to the established casting techniques as practiced here in the UK. After reading this book i can see that some could be regarded as a little stilted. This book in terms of a treatise in distance casting is a revelation.I can not believe that it has been available for so long. Every fly fisher should have a copy.
