## Description

From the Manufacturer Protect Your Lens while Reducing UV ExposureThis UV Filter blocks the invisible Ultra Violet component of light from the sky, which can cause blur and to which many color films react with a blue cast. These filters should be called UV-Blocking Filters, because there are filters for technical applications that pass UV radiation and block all the other wavelengths. Nevertheless, the short term “UV Filter” has become established among photographers. UV Filters are ideal for photography in high altitudes (in the mountains), by the sea and in regions with very clean air. The pictures gain brilliance and disturbing blue casts are avoided. Because the glass is colorless, color rendition is not altered, aside from the elimination of the unwanted blue cast, and no increase in exposure is required. That makes a UV Filter very suitable as protection of the front element of the taking lens against dust, flying sand, sea water spray and the like, and it can be kept on the lens at all times. It is recommended for analog color and black-and-white as well as digital photography.MRC - A Special Scratch-Resistant, Water and Dirt Repelling Coating The left half of this filter has atraditional coating. The right halfhas MRC coating. The lens elements of high-quality lenses and the plano surfaces of filters require a perfect shape and smoothness to achieve the best optical quality. Dirt, greasy fingerprints, water marks and scratches reduce the image contrast and the sharpness, which can result in blooming at light sources and have an effect similar to a soft-focus lens. A clean front lens element and clean filter surfaces are therefore an absolute pre-requisite for demanding photographers. MRC coating causes the waterto bead up and slide right off. The MRC coating is first and foremost a broadband anti-reflection coating. This means that its reflection-reducing effect, which is thus also a transmission-increasing effect, i.e. one which suppresses scattered light and ghost images and transmits more light, has a broadband action over the full spectrum. In contrast, the (almost always blue) single-layer coating only has a high effect in the medium wavelength range around yellow and yellow-green where the eye is most sensitive to light, while its effect is greatly reduced toward the blue-violet and purple-red end regions of the visible spectrum. With the MRC coating, this blue, violet and red to deep-red light cannot produce any contrast reducing scattered light, spotty reflections or ghost images. A broadband effect can only be achieved with a multilayer coating which requires a much higher effort and precision because unevenness and irregularities of the individual layers build up on one another and amplify one another. Schneider therefore uses a plasma-assisted evaporation coating process in which inert gas ions accelerated in an electrical field compact the material deposited on the lens surface in the vacuum chamber. For photographers, the main advantage of MRC coating, is it's ability to combat flare and ghosting. An added benefit is that their filters remain free of dirt longer, so that they do not have to be cleaned so often. When cleaning the filter does become necessary, it is a lot easier to wipe off the dirt with a blower brush, because of MRC's ability to repel dirt and moisture. This also reduces the risk of micro-scratches which can occur during cleaning. Review: Expensive but absolutely worth it. - I wish I had just ordered this filter in the beginning. These are really expensive and cause you to pause when you need to outfit seven really expensive L series Canon lenses. This is not the place to try and save some money, especially if you do any professional shooting. I originally went with HOYA top of the line MRC filters which are a bit less expensive. Unfortunately, if they get dirty, it is almost impossible to get them clean again - especially if the dirt on the filter is oily like finger prints or skin oil. No matter which optical cleaning solution you use they will leave a very slight haze on the filter and this is after almost 20 minutes of cleaning. Not a good thing to happen during a shoot when the talent and crew are standing around waiting for you. I then tested the B+W non MRC filters, these are good as long as no light source is in the frame - you will have ghosting especially at night. For about 30 additional dollars you get the MRC version and this is at the top of the filter hierarchy. I had previously worked in Motion Pictures and the B+W coatings are far superior to all the different brands I have previously worked with doing film. Finally, I bit the bullet and ordered a bunch of the B+W MRC filters. They are perfect and clean very easily. I am slowly but surely replacing all my other filters with these exceptional filters. I also use one of their circular polarizers (had to sell a kid to afford it) but it is amazing and produces great results at the right angles. Summary: This is the top of the line absolute best filter for UV haze protection that is easy to clean, durable and very high quality construction. The only downside is they are very expensive.
Review: The Coating Really Works! If time is money, paying more for this filter is worth it! - Background and Context: I've never given haze filters much thought in the past and have used many Hoya and Tiffen filters (obviously I'm not a professional) on my lenses for the sole purpose of protection (mostly because I have a toddler). I needed a filter for my Canon 24-105 F4/L, and desertcart recommended this filter in the "frequently bought together" section of the product description. I wasn't too sure about spending the extra money on a "magic coating" for a utilitarian haze filter, but all I can say is that I am amazed with this thing and that it is definitely worth the money (see math below for justification)! Problem Statement: I waste a lot of time cleaning my lenses/haze filters (you would too if you had a toddler)- and I still can't get them crystal clear. I also need a filter that won't distort my lens, and most of all, i need something to protect my lens from damage. Math and "Business Case": Assume you have to clean your lens once a week and it takes you 10 minutes each session (you are very thorough) on your uncoated filter. That's roughly 40 minutes a month which equates to 8 hours a year. If you paid someone at minimum wage ($8.25 if you lived in Illinois)to clean your lens, that would be ~$66.00 a year. Then let's assume you will spend 1 minute every two weeks wiping off your B+W filter- using the same calculations, your cost to clean that would be $3.30 a year. So your hypothetical potential labor savings would be about ~$62/year (assuming a non-unionized workforce)- or roughly the cost of the filter at today's desertcart price. If you are looking to purchase this filter, most likely you make more than minimum wage; therefore if your time is money- this filter is definitely worth the time it gives you to do other things (such as take pictures or watching prime time network television). Evidence: The "aha moment" occurred when I took my camera to a water park for my son's birthday party; and as kids will do, they started splashing and shooting water guns at me. When I went to wipe off the lens, I was amazed that the water had actually beaded off and the filter remained relatively crystal clear- i didn't have to do anything. This never happens with my other filters as similar events would result in a long session with lens wipes/solutions, microfiber cloths, and a blower (and the filter still wouldn't be crystal clear). More Evidence: In addition, I am lazy with my cameras and the lens caps are rarely on. I just took a look at my camera and the filter is still crystal clear with no dust or smudges. I hate to sound like an infomercial but this is really amazing! OK, I've spent way too much time discussing a circular piece of glass. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent filter for almost all conditions and well-worth the relatively high cost

After quite a bit of research over several weeks I chose to purchase this B+W filter. Probably the most influential article I read was on Lenstip.com. The article may be somewhat dated (2009), but the depth and concise nature of the article convinced me this filter was top-drawer. The only higher rated filter was the Hoya, but after reading some negative reviews pertaining to quality control or possibly "bait and switch" problems, I went with the B+W. This filter is obviously a high quality product from the minute you pick it up. Build quality is exceptional and I was truly amazed by the clarity of the glass itself. I had to angle the filter in several orientations to see the glass at all. At first glance it's hard to tell there is anything inside the outside ring! Of course the main purpose of this filter is to enhance your photographs. I am not a professional photographer so I don't have experience with other high-end UV filters, but based on the comparison photographs taken with other top-rated filters, the B+W had an obvious reduced amount of added flare (if any). Personal preference might direct someone to desire some flare from a filter, but I personally did not want this "effect". After using the filter for more than a month now it never comes off of my Nikon 18-55mm DX VR lens. This is my go-to lens for my Nikon D90 and my go-to filter. Basically, I never take it off the lens unless I want to shoot with my B+W CPL polarizer filter by itself. What I notice mostly is that the colors and clarity of the shots I have been taking are phenomenal. My Grandfather was a professional photographer since the '30s and I have been taking pictures from the late '60s. I have used very high end cameras, lenses and filters over the years and sometimes the pictures are exceptional with the right combination of equipment and overall conditions. It might be excessive to imagine spending $40 or $50 dollars on a UV filter compared to some for $10 dollars or less. But, I have to say that with my Nikon D90 and a relatively cheap "kit" 18-55mm lens, MOST of the pictures I now take are exceptional. I have rarely seen this level of quality in photographs on a regular basis. Just to note, I use this 72mm filter with a Goja 52mm to 72mm adapter ring.(another very high quality product for the $3.99 price).
