It is in the up position (12 o'clock) for normal operation. rotates the lock to the correct combination and push the black button to open the lock. While holding the button down, turn the screw slot to the three o'clock position. I don't remember turn it clock wise or counter clock wise. After turning the screw, rotate the combination to the new number and then rotate the screw back to 12 o'clock. release the button and rotate the tumblers. The new number should be set then. It will secure your laptop for those times when your on the road. It seems more secure than the models with the key lock. If you search YouTube for picking a Kensington Lock you will see the keyed model appears to be able to be defeated in about 30 seconds, though not sure if it really matters since there is probably a way to defeat this model as well.
