Awesome deal on a really nice hunting knife.

Maybe the best deal you can get for a big game cleaning/skinning knife. The steel is excellent, easy to sharpen to a scalpel and holds an edge very well. The blade design and size is pretty much perfect for elk/moose/ and deer. Pair this with a good deboning knife like an Uncle henry 7 inch fillet knife and your good to go on all big game.

Bought it for the blade steel, modify the sheath or buy a different one

AUS-10 Steel, man what a great steel to work with, sharpen, shape, it's just awesome steel. This one is no different, the blade is polished great, the grind is well enough not to complain. But where Schrade is going wrong with these, is they're getting cheap on the little stuff that makes you want to use their knives.1. The handle. OK it's grippy enough, but add a third screw in the middle. I can put about 20 pennies under the hollow handle, 10 a side, so who's to say what might end up under them down the road. I used some RTV to fill the hollow scales, so they do "feel" better, but I'm looking for a cheap drill press to put the 3rd screw in and not worry about tearing the grip off one of the screws. If that happens, I'm making new scales, and I feel for those who don't have the tools and materials to do that.1. The sheath. I'm sure it's a great sheath for a knife, but not this one. It's too big, knife bounces around enough that the pennies come out of the handle while you walk, and just for fun, the belt clip is the same height and width as the handle of the knife, just on the back side, so you get to learn how to pull a knife out of a sheath that blocks your ability to draw your knife out, like every other sheath I've seen. So, you need to find new scales that fit or make some, very doable, or modify the ones it come with. Then deal with the clip, ULTICLIP isn't a bad option for it, but you would have to cut the factory clip off, and you're good to go. And don't forget, the steel alone is worth far more than the price for everything you get, I've ordered my second knife to work with in less than a week. I now have 3 because this can be such a great set-up.

💯

Sharp blade and balanced nicely

It's Okay.

This being a survival or camp knife is a stretch. The one I received has such an aggressive hollow grind that there is not enough meat behind the edge to be a reliable survival or camp knife in the least. Why did they go with a hollow grind on this I will never know. It would have faired far better with a scandi type or half flat grind, even better would have been a convex but that would up the price a bit. This is a slicer, nothing more, it's not for any tough use at all. It might be a decent skinner, but I would never call this a "survival" knife. Schrade, please remake this in a flat grind(Not full flat), Scandi or if you're feeling frisky a good secondary convex grind and THEN you'd have an excellent "survival" type camp knife you could depend on. Great price point as well.

Great for the money

I'm not a noob. I've owned some game beater knives over the years. I have several super steel knives currently that will break the bank at $300 plus. But this little schrade holds a little piece of my heart. The steel is fine, in that it holds a decent edge and takes one pretty easy. The grips are pretty comfy for my medium size hands. Yes, you can lift the edge if you slip a fingernail under and pry....thank God that's not how you operate a knife! Yes is a hollow grinde.....thank God this is a slicey knife and not a chopper! Imagine chopping with a 4" hollow point knife! Yes the knife has a cheap sheath....thank God because an expensive one would be silly on a cheap knife! But it has a fire rod and a built in sharpener that won't peel steel of my blade like a Pakistan garbage disposal! Ok, so sarcasm worked out, let's be real, this knife functions pretty well. Better steel than everything else at this price point. Blade/handle/jimping that allow a monkey grip, reverse grip, and fine cutting without working around stupid features. The edge retention and shape mean this knife goes right in me deer hunting kit. The ceramic sharpener on the sheath means even if deer #3 has blunted my edge a bit, I can give it a quick hone and stay sharp. That belt clip others complain about, means I can clip it on and off as needed without dropping my belt. That's handy when I'm wearing 10 layers on a zero degree hunt! Lastly this knife is cheap! I'll be sad if I lose it, but I won't be out a ton of money! This thing delivers the goods, so if you are having doubts, quit. The absolute worst that happens is you end up with a great glove box knife for cash you won't miss in a week

sheath has no retention

the built in fire steel and ceramic to sheath make up for it after I heat the sheath and press it to shape great steel

Handle too small for large hands

It's an okay knife.I use large sized gloves, and the handle is rather on the small side and hard to grip securely. It would be better for people with medium or small hands. The blade steel (AUS-10) is very good for this price range. The blade has a hollow grind which makes it better for slicing or whittling. The hollow grind makes the blade edge weaker so not as good for bushcraft usage such as batoning. The built-in sharpener and ferro rod are nice, but I have not tried it.Overall, it is ok, but IMHO the older SCHF56L was a much better bushcraft knife.

Good knife - cheap sheath

Knife is of good quality! Nice size, very good sharpness and ergonomic and secure grip. Perfect for my hands. Sheath is another chapter.... cheap, thin plastic. Nice gadget ideas with the sharpener and firesteel.... but execution could be better. And I absolutely don't like and don't trust the belt clip! Come on Schrade, produce something worthy for this nice knife! If the whole idea of this knife is outdoor, survival and hunting, it should have something that doesn't look like taken from a 7 Dollar knife.By the way, there is no picture of the sheath on the amazon site.... not so proud of it...??
