Q: can i use this on dining room chairs?

Yes, this will work on dining room chairs. You will just want to make sure you purchase the appropriate length of spring for your specific chairs.

Q: What kind and size screws should I use?

I just pried the old hangers (anchor clip) open and removed the old spring. Inserted the new spring and crimped it back shut. The opposite end (on mine) had small coil springs that attached anchor clip to upholstery spring. This kit does not include anchor clips. So do like I did or order anchor clips as needed. Most factory anchors are either hammered in place or a 16 gauge or larger staple. If you are going to use a screw, make sure you mark and pre drill (since your wood is probably a little dried out from age). You'd want a #8 or smaller screw 3/4" long max.

This spring kit would work just fine on a metal frame couch. The only difference is usually the spring clips may be a bit different for a metal frame. So you could either re-use the clips that are already installed on it, or you might be able to make some modifications to the frame and use the clips that come in this kit.
