It does work. It lights - although it's slow to get started. And, I believe it's capable of starting a fire - if you prepare appropriately (by using kindling or some kind of paper product - but make sure you have enough base materials because if it doesn't start in 8 mins, you're going to need more). Here are the issues: (1) It's short. It doesn't fit my grate and wouldn't fit any grate I'm familiar with (several houses and outdoor situations). I used two wedged under the wood and still had trouble. (2) It only burns for 8 minutes! Even with "Kiln dried wood", which I use, 8 minutes is too short to effectively get it started. It's cheap, but difficult to use for a fireplace. It'd probably be good for camping or any situation where you have ready access to sticks, which I don't. Basically, I expected this to do the work and it didn't. I'm not going to return them, but I will not reorder. There are just too many alternatives and DIY options (I'm going to try 90% isopropyl alcohol-soaked wine corks in toilet paper rolls with some bacon grease as a starter when these run out - which won't be long).
