I've amassed a collection of Radio Shack chess computers. I had one and lost it in a natural disaster and when I looked for a replacement, I couldn't help myself until I had nearly a dozen various versions. These chess computers aren't great, at all, compared to today's chess computers and programs but they are definitely able to beat me regularly on the middle and higher levels so, for me, they're very challenging and entertaining.Some of these old chess computers come from estate sales and the families don't know about chess pieces or the pieces are lost or just some of them are lost. I found some sets of pieces for 16 to 30 dollars on an online auction site but those seem very overpriced. Some sellers are even "piecing-out" their sets, selling single chess pieces for prices from $6 to $12 per piece.All of the above is to set the stage for just how great these pieces are - and because I'm and old sailor and I like telling stories. But this is supposed to be about the pieces, isn't it?When I found these pieces, I got very excited and had to order a set to check out. I was very happy when they came; they're nearly perfect. I also ordered a magnetic chessboard set that includes these same pieces and it's fantastic as well; these pieces work great on the magnetic board in that set, even when tipped so the board is vertical.The most common measures of chess piece size and scale are base diameter and king height. On these pieces, the base diameters, at 20 mm (or 3/4 inch) for the king and 15 mm (or 9/16 inch) for the pawns, are pretty close in diameter to the original Radio Shack pieces and the king height, at 48 mm (or about 1 and 7/8 inches), is actually about 2mm taller than the original Radio Shack pieces. The height difference is similar for the queen. The pawns and pieces, on the other hand, are about 15% shorter than the Radio Shack pieces, giving them a squat appearance on the board, similar to watching old TV shows on your wide-screen TV - an effect you hardly notice unless you're looking for it or thinking about it.Other than that smallest bit of shortcoming regarding the size, these are great replacements for the Radio Shack chess sets and should work just as well for most or all other similarly sized chess board scenarios, whether electronic or brain powered.
