In 1962 I bought one of these to take camping to hammer all sorts of things including rocks, concrete, asphalt, tent stakes, splitting wedges, large dowels and pins, serious roadside automotive repairs, etc. I've also used it a lot in construction and teardown projects. Recently I bought another for my son-in-law. It is great for all types of construction and home improvement projects. If you put up a stud wall and need to move it a bit, this is the tool. The short handle allows great control and can prevent a number of self-inflicted injuries. It is in-destructable. The handle and integrated head are all steel with some sort of miracle, plastic type material covering the handle and forming a comfortable grip. Of course, the price is more than double what I paid for it back in 1962, but it should last at least four or five generations--or more. It is case hardened and really can be abused. Don't drop it on your toes--it is 3 lbs. and can smart quite a bit. It also works well for blocking when you or someone else is hammering or pounding out something from the other side. There are others on the market but this is the original indestructable, all steel, small sledge hammer. Try one, you won't be sorry. And, be carefull about loaning it out--a well meaning friend just might forget to give it back!

I love that this is a one piece small sledge and is made in the USA. However, from the factory, the finish and refinement is quite poor. Many dents and indentations on the mallet head. The paint looks good but you can tell by the change in shade in the low spots. Is this going to see some tough use, yes. Will I return it for this, no. Would I have picked this off the shelf or purchased it not on sale, also no.

3 lbs. is the perfect size for this hammer. 4 lbs. would have been very wearing on the wrist. 2 lbs. felt just a little heavier than a regular full-sized hammer. My gardener absolutely loved it. Nicely made. Highly recommend.

These are great hammers. I bought this to replace an identical one that I seem to have lost. I used and abused my original one for over 12 years before losing it. The only issue I ever had was the padded handle did get loose, I removed it and glued it on at some point, it was starting to get loose again before I lost it- it didn’t feel like it would fall off, just had about 1/4” of play at that point. I’d definitely recommend this hammer.
