The tray above doesn't displace water in the one below, but it might stick to it slightly if you overfill. The ice cubes a little smaller, the trays release the cubes with just a little twist of the tray. Neither the trays or the ice crack or break. **Q: Phthalates free plastic?** A: That's what they claim. **Q: when filling does water move to all cubes without spilling out sides or does each cube need to be filled separately?** A: I do not use tap water; I fill with filtered water from a pitcher. I fill the water to above actual cube level, then tip the tray gently back and forth to fill the individual cubes to full.
