I stand in admiration for the broadly encompassing view that Professor Xin Wen has created through his detailed and multilingual study of this crucial region and time period when China’s interactions with people at and beyond its borders played out in a manner that encouraged exchange of respect, ideas and goods that promoted diplomatic exchange. He is equally talented at scrutinizing minute details and envisioning the big picture. It was a joy to read his fluent and evocative prose. I look forward to reading further research from such a fine young scholar. Bravo for this valuable contribution to the field of Dunhuang studies.
