It's sometimes hard to get the dirt out if the ground is hard, but it works better than the shovel.

Heavier than I expected. And SHARP! Watch your fingers when unwrapping the sample part of the tool, I sliced my finger wide open. Blood everywhere. My only complaint (minor) is that the bolt holding the upper and lower bars together prevents one from adjusting the step to lower and upper depths, ie if you wanted to slide the step from a 6” depth stop up to an 18” depth stop, you’ll need to remove the bolt holding the bars together. Thats minor though, especially if you only plan to use this for sampling the top soil.

I’m a professional crop consultant and take over 2000 samples a year and this is my third one and this is my favorite hand probe it’s light and fairly sturdy with the nice wide foot peg so I haven’t had tendinitis since I started use this one they last 1500 samples (~15000 plugs) usually then wear out as expected in my sandy soil and not worn bad just barely measurable amount it just doesn’t hold the core in dry sand as well when it starts to get worn out but still works great in moist or heavy soil
