No it doesn’t have actual mermaids. It has mermaid scales.

Q: Does it have a a separate section to hold an ice pack so it isn't touch the food?

No it's all one big opening on the inside and has the front pocket on the outside. I just put the cold pack flat on the bottom under the food and always works out perfect. I love this lunch box so much! My daughter is not easy with things and thus lunch box is still holding together lol
