I am a retired tool & die maker. I use them for working on metal. These will work on any kind of metal including hardened steel. You don't need carbide for wood or plastics but these will work on them. You will need to clean them frequently. I don't recommend using these for gems as one person enquired about. I bought these to trim off the excess. Initially, I tried using these in a cordless drill and they barely scratched the bracket. Once I chucked it into my RotoZip, they worked fantastic. In fact, they worked so well that I had to create a little shield to direct the shavings away from my face. I was working in a tight spot and couldn't change the angle to direct the shavings differently or switch the rotation direction. At any rate, these made short work of the task and I couldn't be happier about my purchase.
