Yes, the digital screen shows the month, date, the day of the week and temperature clearly.

How do you set the time? Can you set it manually, or does it pick up a signal automatically?

You set the time manually. The clock has 2 settings, one for the analogue clock and one for the digital and they both have their own independent battery. The digital clock doesn't display a digital time but you set the digital time so that the digital display, shows the current date accurately and also the temperature.

Is it possible for the display to show time as default instead of the date?

The digital time cannot always stay on the display. It can stay 5 seconds.
