I originally bought this mortar and pestle because I wanted flexibility making eggshell powder, as well as things like homemade guacamole. For the eggshells especially, I preferred the idea of grinding them manually rather than using an electric grinder because I wanted more control over how fine I could get the powder. It has worked very well for that. I use a small scoop for the finished powder and mix it into my dogs’ food. The first thing you’ll want to do is properly season the mortar. I washed mine with warm water and no soap, then ground dry rice as finely as possible before rinsing and drying it. I repeated the process with more rice, this time adding garlic, coarse Himalayan salt and pepper. After another rinse and thorough drying, mine was ready to use. One of my favorite things about this particular size is the weight of the pestle. It feels substantial in your hand, so the weight helps do some of the work rather than having to rely entirely on force. I bought the 4-cup size, and I’m very happy I went larger. I also have experience with smaller mortar and pestle sets: a 1.5-cup size is handy for spices and smaller jobs, while around 2 cups gives you more room for things that require heavier grinding. The 4-cup size is especially nice for guacamole because the extra room makes mixing and mashing much easier without ingredients getting too close to the edge. It is a bit heavy, which is worth knowing before ordering. My shipping box arrived slightly opened, presumably from the weight, but the mortar itself was protected with bubble wrap and arrived completely fine. Overall, this has become one of those simple kitchen tools that’s surprisingly handy to have around. There’s no motor or complicated mechanism, just a substantial piece of stone that can grind, crush and mash a huge variety of ingredients. I think it would also make a lovely and practical kitchen gift.

A bit smaller than my husband wanted for his guacamole but it is the perfect size for me to grind up our moringa seeds. It is scored on the inside so there is always friction to grind with and it is very heavy with a nice base. It is also attractive. I leave it on my counter. Can't beat the price as well.
